Atwoli Reveals What the Ruto-Raila Deal Means for Workers

Francis Atwoli, the Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), has voiced his support for the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Atwoli believes the agreement is a positive step towards creating a more stable political environment, which will, in turn, benefit the country’s workers.

In a statement released to the media, Atwoli highlighted that COTU views the MoU as a crucial move towards peace and economic growth.

He noted that Kenya’s development has long been hampered by ongoing political disputes, which have had a negative impact on job creation and the improvement of working conditions for the average Kenyan worker.

Atwoli pointed out that Kenyan workers often suffer due to the economic crises triggered by political instability. He believes that the MoU will help create a more stable political atmosphere, which will, in turn, positively affect the economy.

This stability, he added, is particularly important for vulnerable groups like workers, women, and children, who often bear the worst effects of economic downturns linked to political unrest.

He praised the signing of the MoU on March 7 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, calling it a positive development for the country.

Atwoli emphasized that Kenya’s unity and stability should always come before any individual’s political ambitions.

According to him, the country’s future should not be marked by constant political conflict, but by a governance system that focuses on stability, economic progress, and inclusive development.

Atwoli also stressed that a responsible opposition should not exist solely to oppose the government but should act as a constructive force that holds the government accountable.

He further called on the judiciary to maintain fairness and uphold the law impartially.

COTU has pledged its full support for any efforts that aim to bring political stability to the country, as this will lead to economic growth, the creation of more jobs, and improvements in the working conditions for Kenyan workers.

Atwoli urged the government to shift its focus from ongoing political battles to effective governance. He emphasized the importance of supporting elected leaders in their efforts to bring development while ensuring proper checks and balances are in place to maintain transparency and accountability.
