Police officers have arrested a driver involved in a tragic accident along Ngong Road, where a vehicle in President William Ruto’s motorcade fatally struck a foreign national on Thursday.
According to police sources who spoke to Citizen TV, the driver—whose name has not been disclosed—was briefly detained before being released on cash bail. He is expected to appear in court as investigations into the incident continue.
Authorities have since towed the government vehicle to Kilimani Police Station, where forensic experts are examining it to gather evidence.
The victim has been identified as 79-year-old Edgar Charles Frederick, a British citizen. His body has been taken to Lee Funeral Home, where a postmortem examination will be conducted.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the elderly man was attempting to cross the road near Adams Arcade when he was hit by the convoy.
Some witnesses claimed that he may have had a hearing impairment, which could explain why he did not respond to warnings from a traffic officer clearing the road for the presidential motorcade.
Following the fatal accident, the National Police Service (NPS) launched a formal investigation into the matter.
Authorities have also issued a strong appeal to all road users, including motorists and pedestrians, urging them to be extra cautious and strictly follow traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“The National Police Service calls on all motorists, pedestrians, and other road users to be extremely careful and strictly observe traffic rules at all times to avoid accidents,” the NPS said in a statement.
