Royal Media Services (RMS) Chairperson, SK Macharia, has opened up about the role he played in securing Betty Batuli Montet’s nomination as a senator by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking on Saturday during the burial of Colonel (Rtd) James Gitahi in Machakos, Macharia disclosed that he personally convinced Raila to approve Montet’s nomination.
According to Macharia, Montet had been a strong supporter of Raila throughout the last four general election campaigns. Her unwavering dedication to Raila’s political journey made Macharia feel she deserved recognition.
He revealed that after the 2022 elections, he had the chance to nominate himself for the Senate seat but instead pushed for Montet’s appointment.
“Mama Wangeci, in every election where I have campaigned for Raila, including roadshows across the country and even in the Kikuyu regions, Montet has always stood by my side. Sometimes we faced hostility, but she never abandoned me,” Macharia recalled.
He went on to reveal that after Montet’s nomination, she wrote him a heartfelt letter expressing gratitude. “She told me, ‘SK, you are truly wonderful. You could have used your influence to get yourself appointed as a senator, but instead, you chose to give that opportunity to our daughter.’ That meant a lot,” Macharia shared.
Betty Montet’s Senate Nomination
Betty Montet was nominated as a Senator in 2022 under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
She was married to Colonel (Rtd) James Gitahi Nguyo, a highly respected military pilot known for flying former Presidents Mwai Kibaki and Daniel arap Moi.
Tragic Road Accident Claims Gitahi’s Life
Tragically, Colonel Gitahi lost his life on March 5 in a horrific road accident at Kyumvi Junction along the Mombasa Highway. His vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming lorry before bursting into flames.
At the time of the accident, the retired pilot was driving alone. Witnesses at the scene reported that he had attempted to overtake another lorry but miscalculated the distance of an approaching truck. The impact sent his car off the road, where it caught fire, trapping him inside.
Despite efforts by emergency responders, they were unable to reach him in time, and he was burned beyond recognition.
His death shocked many, as he was widely respected for his service in the military and his role as a personal pilot to Kenya’s former presidents.
