Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has laid out strict conditions before considering any discussions with President William Ruto’s government.
Speaking on Saturday at the Gospel Outreach Church, Joska Transformation Centre in Nairobi, Kalonzo made it clear that he has no intention of aligning himself with the government or entering into any form of cooperation, unlike some of his fellow opposition leaders.
The former Vice President stated that the only reason he would engage with the government or meet with the President would be to discuss the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
“I have no issue sitting down for talks if we are discussing who will chair the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The person chosen must be neutral and not easily manipulated for selfish interests. Only under such circumstances can we meet,” Kalonzo asserted.
Confident in his bid for the 2027 presidential race, Kalonzo firmly stated that he would only meet President Ruto again during the official handover of power after securing victory in the election.
“Beyond that, the next time we will meet will be at the ballot in 2027. Just like how Ruto met Uhuru during the 2022 power handover, that will be the only way I will meet him again,” he added.
Criticism of Government’s Economic Policies
The opposition leader criticized the idea of working with the government while thousands of unemployed graduates continue to struggle, accusing the administration of failing to create meaningful job opportunities for young Kenyans.
He also lamented the tough economic conditions that have resulted in the closure of businesses, leading to massive job losses.
Kalonzo blamed the government for failing to address the issue, citing the departure of companies from Kenya to neighboring countries such as Tanzania and Uganda.
“If we do not restore the 24-hour economy, we will not be able to bring back the factories that have shut down or relocated to Tanzania and Uganda,” he warned.
Push for a New Public Holiday
Kalonzo also reignited his long-standing call for June 25 to be declared a public holiday, vowing that if the current government does not implement it, he will ensure its official recognition when he becomes President in 2027.
Following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between President Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Kalonzo has increasingly emerged as the main opposition voice, with leaders allied to the government urging him to join the deal.
However, he has remained firm in his decision not to join the government, especially if the arrangement does not directly benefit ordinary Kenyans.
“If the discussions at KICC do not include a clear plan on how Kenyans will be compensated for the lives lost due to police brutality, then nothing meaningful will come from those talks apart from betrayal,” Kalonzo declared while addressing the People’s Dialogue Festival in Nairobi on Friday, March 7.
