Sonko Elected as National Patron of Boda Boda and Tuk Tuk Transport Union – What It Means
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has been elected as the national Patron of the Boda Boda and Tuk Tuk Transport Cooperative Union of Kenya.
The election took place on Sunday, March 16, marking a significant step for Sonko in the transport sector.
Expressing his excitement on social media, Sonko assured operators in the boda boda and tuk tuk industry that he was fully committed to the role.
He made several promises aimed at transforming the sector and ensuring operators’ rights are protected.
The transport cooperative union, which unites various boda boda and tuk tuk associations from across the country, boasts a membership of over 2.5 million operators. Speaking about his new role, Sonko stated, “It was a great honour to be unanimously elected as the Patron of the Boda Boda and Tuk Tuk Transport Cooperative Union of Kenya. This is a national body that brings together all Saccos and associations under one umbrella, representing more than 2.5 million operators nationwide.”
Sonko’s Plans for the Sector
As the newly elected patron, Sonko outlined his key priorities. One of his major promises is to advocate for the rights of boda boda and tuk tuk operators, ensuring they are protected from unfair treatment.
He also pledged to eliminate cartels that have infiltrated the industry and taken advantage of operators through corruption and exploitation.
Furthermore, Sonko emphasized the need to restore order within the sector, promising a well-organized and more professional transport system.
He expressed gratitude to the union’s leadership for trusting him with the position and vowed to use his influence to push for positive change.
“I sincerely thank the leadership of this union for believing in me. I take this responsibility seriously and commit to fighting for the rights of boda boda and tuk tuk operators,” Sonko said.
“To those cartels and criminals who have turned the boda boda industry into a hub of illegal activities, be warned—we will not tolerate your actions anymore. We will take the necessary steps to clean up the sector and restore its reputation.”
Sonko also assured Kenyans that his leadership would bring discipline, professionalism, and better service delivery within the boda boda and tuk tuk industry.
Sonko’s Return to Leadership
This is the first leadership role Sonko has taken on since his impeachment as Nairobi Governor in 2020 over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
His removal was backed by 88 out of 122 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).
Since then, Sonko has focused on humanitarian work, frequently helping Kenyans in distress. He has been involved in various charity projects, including providing legal and financial support to those in need.
Recently, he gained widespread attention after adopting a three-year-old boy whose father was tragically murdered in front of him while on his way to school.
With his new role in the boda boda and tuk tuk transport union, Sonko now steps into a position that allows him to influence policies affecting millions of operators across the country.
His leadership will be closely watched as he seeks to bring reforms to the industry.
