Murkomen Restructures Nairobi Region, Announces New Appointments
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has unveiled a major restructuring plan for the Nairobi region, introducing three new sub-regions to boost government service delivery across the capital.
In a gazette notice published on Thursday, November 13, Murkomen announced the creation of three new Service Delivery Coordination Units — Nairobi North, Nairobi East, and Nairobi West.
He explained that the move was driven by the rapid population growth in the city, which is now estimated to have surpassed five million residents.
The Interior CS said the new administrative units will make it easier for government officers to serve citizens efficiently and respond to local challenges more effectively.
He emphasized that Nairobi’s expanding population has created the need for more decentralized and responsive administrative structures.
As part of this restructuring, Murkomen promoted three senior officers to head the newly established sub-regions. Rose Wanjiru Chege will lead Nairobi West, Patrick Simiyu Werre will oversee Nairobi East, and Simon Odhiambo Osumba will take charge of Nairobi North.
The three officers have been tasked with ensuring improved coordination of government services in their respective areas.
In addition to the Nairobi restructuring, Murkomen also announced the promotion of six officers to the rank of County Commissioner.
Those promoted include Joseph Mwangi Wamuti (Tana River), Linda Adhiambo Okola (Taita Taveta), David Ntawuasa Saruni (West Pokot), Michael Yator (Kajiado), Jeremiah Mwai Gicheru (Kericho), and Peter Mwangi Maina (Vihiga).
Murkomen revealed that his ministry had also made several transfers of County Commissioners to different regions. He noted that the reassignments were based on each officer’s experience, competence, and suitability to serve in the new areas.
According to the CS, the restructuring aligns with the government’s broader efforts to address security and service delivery concerns raised by Kenyans during the recent Jukwaa la Usalama public forums held across the country.
These forums allowed citizens to voice their challenges directly to government officials, leading to a series of reforms within the Interior Ministry.
Murkomen affirmed that the changes take effect immediately, with the newly promoted and transferred officers expected to assume their new duties without delay.
“The changes take effect with immediate effect. Congratulations and Godspeed to the promoted officials as you embark on your new roles,” Murkomen stated.
He further assured Kenyans that the government remains dedicated to bringing services closer to the people through deliberate decentralization and efficiency improvements.
“We are committed to bringing services closer to wananchi through deliberate decentralisation and efficiency enhancement,” he reiterated.
The reshuffle comes at a crucial time when various parts of the country are facing heightened security concerns, especially as Kenya heads towards the 2027 general elections.
The Interior Ministry hopes that the new administrative structure will not only strengthen service delivery but also enhance coordination in dealing with emerging security and governance issues.
Through this move, Murkomen reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a more responsive, people-centered public service that meets the needs of all Kenyans.
