Former Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has secured a new position in President William Ruto’s government, nearly nine months after she was removed from her previous role.
In a statement released by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed on Thursday afternoon, it was announced that President Ruto nominated Nakhumicha to serve as the Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United Nations Habitat in Nairobi.
Alongside Nakhumicha, Ruto also nominated James Buyekane Muhati and Abdi Dubat Fidhow for the roles of Consul-General in Guangzhou, China, and Arusha, Tanzania, respectively.
Additionally, Peter Tum was nominated as the Kenyan Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Alfred K’Ombundo was appointed as Deputy Head of Mission in Belgium.
The announcement stated, “As per Article 132 (2) (e) of the Constitution, His Excellency the President has nominated these individuals to serve in various diplomatic roles, including Ambassadors, Consuls-General, and Deputy Heads of Mission, in Kenya’s foreign missions abroad.”
These nominations have been forwarded to the National Assembly for review and approval, as required by the Constitution.
Nakhumicha’s nomination comes just months after she publicly appealed for the government to appoint her to another position, revealing that she had been facing financial difficulties since leaving her post.
In an emotional appeal made in October of the previous year, Nakhumicha shared how challenging it had been for her to adjust to life without her Cabinet position, despite the recognition her name still carries due to her former role.
“People still call me Cabinet Secretary, and you know, my name, Nakhumicha, is quite unique. It’s associated with my time as a Health CS,” she explained.
“Bishop, please pray for me, it’s not easy to go from being a minister to just being Nakhumicha. But I trust God, and I believe greater blessings are ahead.”
Susan Nakhumicha was dismissed from her Cabinet position in July of the previous year amid widespread anti-government protests.
She was among several Cabinet Secretaries who lost their positions, with the exception of Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi.
During a press briefing on July 1, 2024, President Ruto stated that the dismissals were part of a plan to refresh his administration, with each decision made after careful evaluation.
