The mother of Benedict Kabiru, a Kenyan police officer who was reportedly killed in Haiti, has spoken for the first time, demanding clear answers from the government regarding her son’s whereabouts.
Speaking to NTV on Thursday, March 27, Kabiru’s mother expressed deep concern, stating that she was officially informed by police authorities that her son was missing.
This contradicts multiple reports indicating that Kabiru had lost his life in Haiti.
Meanwhile, the Presidential Transitional Council (PTC) of Haiti confirmed that Kabiru was the police officer who was shot and killed on Monday, March 24, 2025, in Savien during an anti-gang operation.
The PTC stated that he was part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission and was working alongside Haitian forces when the tragic incident occurred.
Haiti’s President, Fritz Alphonse Jean, paid tribute to the fallen officer, describing Kabiru as a courageous individual who made the ultimate sacrifice for the stability and future of the Caribbean nation.
However, despite these confirmations, Kabiru’s mother remains hopeful and insists that conflicting reports have created uncertainty.
She revealed that officials have only informed her that her son is missing and have not confirmed his death.
“I am pleading with the government to give me a clear answer as soon as possible. Since yesterday at 6:30 a.m., I was informed by the Administration Police Commander in Kikuyu that my son had disappeared.
It has now been over 24 hours, and I still have no official update. However, social media is saying that my son is dead,” she said.
The grieving mother, who is a single parent, expressed her desperation, stating that Kabiru was her firstborn and the backbone of their family. She demanded that the government provide her with answers and ensure her son returns home safely.
“My son is my only hope. I want him back, alive and well, just as I last saw him,” she added.
She also urged Kenyans to stop spreading unverified reports about Kabiru’s alleged death, emphasizing that such rumors were causing the family immense pain.
“To those claiming my son is dead, please stop. Kabiru is alive. Kabiru will live. The internet should stop spreading falsehoods,” she pleaded.
Kabiru’s mother further shared that she had been in frequent contact with her son since he was deployed to Haiti in July 2024. In their most recent conversation, he informed her that he had been transferred to Central Haiti, a dangerous area controlled by gangs.
Reports of Kabiru’s death first surfaced on Tuesday, March 25, when local Haitian media reported that he had been killed during a confrontation with armed criminals.
During the attack, three armored vehicles belonging to the peacekeeping team were also set ablaze by the gangs. Videos circulating online showed the vehicles engulfed in flames, adding to the distressing nature of the incident.
Confirming the events, Kenyan Police Spokesperson in Haiti, Jack Ombaka, explained that the attack occurred after the officers’ vehicles became stuck in a ditch, which was suspected to have been deliberately created by the gangs as a trap.
Kabiru is now the second Kenyan police officer to have lost his life in Haiti since the deployment of Kenyan forces to the gang-infested country.
