The Super Metro matatu sacco is once again making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Just days after being allowed back on the road following a suspension, one of their matatus was involved in an accident with a black Range Rover that had diplomatic license plates.
Super Metro’s Recent Troubles
Super Metro’s troubles began when a conductor was accused of pushing a passenger out of a moving vehicle, leading to his tragic death.
The victim, identified as Gilbert Thuo, reportedly had a dispute with the conductor over KSh 30, which ultimately cost him his life.
Following the incident, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) took swift action against the sacco, suspending its operations due to multiple legal violations.
According to NTSA, some of Super Metro’s vehicles were operating with expired inspection certificates, lacked valid speed limiter certificates, and did not have speed data transition displays as required by law.
In response, Super Metro was forced to undergo thorough inspections, with hundreds of its vehicles lined up for review on Saturday, March 22.
Additionally, the sacco conducted a sensitization meeting for its staff to address customer service concerns and other operational matters.
On Monday, March 24, the Transport and Licensing Appeals Board lifted the suspension, allowing Super Metro vehicles to return to the roads. However, it did not take long before controversy struck again.
Matatu Collides with Range Rover
Shortly after resuming operations, a Super Metro matatu was involved in an accident at the Daystar University roundabout. Images circulating online showed the public service vehicle (PSV) had collided with a black Range Rover bearing diplomatic plates.
While the exact details of the accident remain unclear, the matatu appeared to have hit the SUV from behind, damaging the Range Rover’s windows and denting its body. The incident quickly sparked reactions from Kenyans online, with many poking fun at Super Metro’s recent misfortunes.
Here are some of the reactions:
- o_bryan90: “Maybe the driver missed the sensitization meeting.”
- top2tymess: “Were you at the meeting? Driver: Which meeting are you talking about?”
- Flaviachege: “They are right back where they left off.”
- elirosh_thedj: “When the devil bets on you.”
- dj_sam_ke: “Sometimes, business can literally drive you up the wall.”
- ft_bill_: “Wait, did you just hit a Range Rover?”
- faa_abdul: “Is this sacco cursed or what?”
- Plentyhunnidbands: “Boss, please log in to WhatsApp for a little bit.”
- deborah_mogere: “This looks like ‘let’s pick up where we left off.’”
Matatu Conductor Accused of Assaulting Passenger
Meanwhile, Super Metro remains in the spotlight over another disturbing incident. A conductor was accused of assaulting a passenger over a KSh 30 fare.
A video circulating on social media captured a group of angry passengers confronting the matatu crew, demanding an explanation for the assault. The conductor, who was standing outside, was ordered to get back into the vehicle.
One of the passengers explained that the victim was injured and bleeding over the small amount of money.
The driver attempted to clarify that the passenger had paid, but the mobile payment message had been delayed. However, the passengers were not convinced and forced the matatu to drive straight to a police station.
Many Kenyans online praised the passengers for standing up for the victim, while others noted that KSh 30 had become an unfortunate number associated with tragedy, referencing Gilbert Thuo’s death.
Super Metro continues to face scrutiny, and with back-to-back controversies, it remains to be seen how the sacco will navigate through these turbulent times.
