President William Ruto has appointed former Lunga Lunga Member of Parliament Khatib Mwashetani as the new chairperson of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Board of Directors.
According to a gazette notice dated Friday, March 28, Mwashetani will serve as the NTSA board’s non-executive chairperson for a period of three years.
The appointment comes as part of Ruto’s ongoing efforts to restructure key government agencies.
“In exercise of the powers granted by the National Transport and Safety Authority Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Mwashetani Khatib Abdallah as the non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of NTSA for a term of three years,” the official notice stated.
Mwashetani’s Appointment Leads to Bosire’s Exit
With Mwashetani taking over the leadership role, the appointment also resulted in the removal of Timothy Bosire from the NTSA board. Bosire, who also serves as the Treasurer of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), had initially rejected the appointment, citing personal reasons.
Following his appointment, Mwashetani expressed gratitude to President Ruto, promising to lead NTSA with integrity and commitment.
“I am deeply honoured and grateful for this appointment as the Non-Executive Chairman of NTSA. I sincerely appreciate the trust and confidence that President Dr. William Samoei Ruto has placed in me,” he said.
He further pledged to work closely with the NTSA board and other stakeholders to improve the transport sector in the country.
“Under your visionary leadership, Mr. President, and alongside a dedicated board, I commit to executing my duties with integrity, dedication, and full commitment towards achieving your vision for a better Kenya,” Mwashetani added.
Ruto Adds More Members to Gender-Based Violence Taskforce
In addition to the NTSA leadership change, President Ruto also appointed former Nandi Woman Representative Tecla Chebet Tum as a member of the Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), including femicide.
Tum will join the 42-member committee that Ruto established in January 2024, which is chaired by former Deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza.
The formation of the committee was prompted by a rising wave of GBV and femicide cases in the country, which have caused widespread emotional, physical, and economic suffering to victims, families, and communities.
When unveiling the task force, Ruto highlighted existing weaknesses in preventing, investigating, prosecuting, and responding to GBV and femicide cases.
The committee’s primary role is to review the current legal and policy frameworks, identify gaps, and recommend measures to enhance the fight against gender-based violence.
Among the notable figures appointed to the committee is Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo.
Crime and investigative journalist Franklin Wallah has also been included in the team, along with Linah Jebii Kilimo, a former Marakwet East Member of Parliament and former Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Cooperative Development and Marketing.
Additionally, Dr. Sam Thenya, the founder of Nairobi Women’s Hospital, was named a member of the committee.
The task force is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the GBV crisis in Kenya and formulating long-term solutions to protect vulnerable individuals, especially women and girls.
