Residents of Ongata Rongai in Kajiado County are living in fear after CCTV footage surfaced online, showing a lioness prowling through a residential area at night.
The video, obtained by Newshub.co.ke, captures the lioness stealthily approaching the entrance of a well-secured compound.
Despite the bright security light mounted above the metal gate, the big cat confidently climbed onto the concrete perimeter wall, peering into the compound as if surveying its surroundings.
Since its release, the footage has gone viral, sparking widespread reactions among Kenyans on social media. Many expressed deep concern over the presence of a lioness in a populated neighborhood, fearing for their safety.
Others, however, speculated that the lioness might have been wandering within its natural habitat, given Ongata Rongai’s proximity to wildlife conservation areas.
The alarming sighting has prompted urgent calls for intervention by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), with many urging authorities to track down the lioness and return it to its rightful habitat before it poses a danger to residents.
Growing Cases of Wild Animal Sightings
Encounters between humans and wild animals, particularly lions and hyenas, have become increasingly common in Nairobi and its surrounding areas.
Earlier this year, in January, another lioness was spotted in Ongata Rongai, triggering panic among locals. The Kenya Wildlife Service had to deploy a special team to locate and capture the big cat, which had managed to evade capture for several months.
On January 20, KWS officials confirmed that they had successfully captured the lioness. Wildlife rangers later revealed that the animal was likely the mother of two other lions that had escaped from their habitat and were captured late last year.
During the operation, rangers observed that the lioness had sustained multiple injuries, possibly from an encounter with frightened residents attempting to fend it off.
“Yesterday, our Problem Animal Control (PAC) team successfully captured a lioness in Sorora Drive, Rimpa, Kajiado North. Based on the unique notch on her ear, we believe she is the mother of the two lions that were captured earlier in the same area,” KWS officials stated.
With such incidents becoming more frequent, residents are urging authorities to implement long-term solutions to prevent wild animals from straying into residential neighborhoods.
