Super Metro Bus Overturns in Accident Along Thika Road
A bus operated by Super Metro was involved in an accident on Saturday, March 29, along Thika Road.
The crash, which occurred near Jomoko on the road leading to Thika town, involved a collision between the bus and a private vehicle.
The impact caused the bus to overturn, while the car veered off the road and landed in a ditch.
Images obtained by Newshub.co.ke confirmed witness accounts of the incident. Preliminary reports indicated that there were no casualties, but authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
Eyewitness Accounts and Immediate Rescue Efforts
Following the accident, bystanders quickly rushed to the scene to assist in rescuing passengers trapped inside the overturned bus. The crash left part of the service lane blocked, causing traffic disruptions.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the Super Metro bus driver was speeding and driving recklessly, allegedly overlapping other vehicles before the crash. These claims, however, remain unverified as authorities continue their investigations.
Public Outrage Over Super Metro’s Conduct
As news of the accident spread, many Kenyans took to social media to express their frustrations over the operations of Super Metro. Some users criticized the bus company’s safety standards, with a section calling for a boycott.
“When it rains, it pours. Stay away from Super Metro,” one X (formerly Twitter) user warned. Another added, “Boycott Super Metro.”
This incident comes at a time when Super Metro is already under heavy scrutiny over its operations. Just days ago, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) had temporarily suspended the company’s operating license due to multiple violations of Public Service Vehicles (PSV) regulations.
NTSA’s Suspension and Legal Battle
On Thursday, March 20, NTSA issued an official notice suspending Super Metro’s license for failing to comply with the Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 2014, along with other safety standards.
In its directive, NTSA also warned the public against boarding Super Metro vehicles during the suspension period. Traffic police officers were instructed to impound any of the company’s buses found operating on the roads despite the suspension.
However, in response to the authority’s demands, Super Metro complied by submitting over 200 buses for inspection at NTSA’s offices along Likoni Road in Nairobi.
Tragic Incident That Led to the Crackdown
Super Metro’s troubles escalated following a tragic incident where a conductor allegedly threw a passenger out of a moving bus. The passenger died on the spot, and the crew fled the scene. This incident sparked public outrage, with many accusing the company of negligence and unprofessionalism, prompting NTSA to take action.
Although the Transport Licensing and Appeals Board (TLAB) later overturned NTSA’s suspension, allowing Super Metro to resume operations, the matter remains unresolved in court. NTSA has yet to issue a formal response to the tribunal’s ruling, leaving the company’s future uncertain.
This latest accident is likely to add more pressure on Super Metro as authorities continue to monitor its operations.
