Former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Chairperson for Magarini, Kilifi County, Ahmed Maamun Ali, widely known as Akaku, has passed away. His sudden death occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 1. Reports indicate that his passing was unexpected, leaving many in shock.
ODM Deputy Party Leader and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir expressed deep sorrow over Akaku’s death, describing him as a committed leader who played a crucial role in strengthening ODM at the grassroots level.
“I am deeply shocked and saddened by the passing of my dear friend and comrade, Ahmed Maamun Ali, popularly known as Akaku. He was not just a dedicated leader in our party but also a patriot who served diligently as the ODM Chairman for Magarini.
His commitment to justice, fairness, and empowering the community was unmatched. His absence will be profoundly felt by those of us who had the privilege of working with him,” Governor Abdulswamad said in his condolence message.
Apart from his role in ODM, Akaku was actively involved in community affairs and politics. In 2007, he contested for the Magarini parliamentary seat but did not succeed.
Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro also paid tribute to Akaku, expressing his grief and acknowledging the significant impact he had on the local community.
“I am extremely heartbroken and at a loss for words after learning about the sudden demise of my dear friend Ahmed Maamun Ali, also known as Akaku. His passing is a great loss, and he will be missed dearly,” Governor Mung’aro stated.
“Akaku was a dedicated leader who served as the ODM Chairman for Magarini. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and everyone who knew him,” he added.
Akaku’s Death Comes Ahead of ODM Grassroots Elections
Akaku’s passing comes at a crucial time, just days before ODM was scheduled to hold grassroots elections across different constituencies in the country.
The ODM National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) Chairperson, Emily Awita, had recently announced that the constituency-level elections would take place on Wednesday, April 9, between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The elections will be conducted either through consensus or by voting via a show of hands.
The application process for those interested in various grassroots positions began on March 20 and ended on March 31.
As per ODM’s election structure, 77 officials will be elected in each constituency across four different committees: the Mainstream Committee, the Women’s League, the Youth League, and the Disability League.
Some of the key positions up for grabs include Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Treasurer, Deputy Treasurer, Organising Secretary, Deputy Organising Secretary, Secretary for Women, Secretary for Youth, Secretary for Disability, and Special Interest Group Representative, among others.
Given Akaku’s strong influence in the Coast region, many ODM candidates had been seeking his endorsement ahead of the upcoming elections.
His sudden passing leaves a gap in the party’s leadership, and his contributions to ODM’s growth will be remembered.
