On Monday, April 7, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) released a list of seven common mistakes students make when applying for university and college courses through the student portal.
The first major mistake KUCCPS highlighted is entering the wrong phone number when filling out the contact form.
This is a serious issue because students may end up missing important updates or communication from KUCCPS, which can affect their placement process.
The second common error is failing to submit the courses selected in the Course Basket. Many students mistakenly think that adding courses to the basket is enough, but KUCCPS clarified that applicants must go a step further and officially submit their application.
“Placing courses in the Course Basket is not the final step. You must click on ‘Application/Revision’ and then ‘Apply Now’ to complete the process,” KUCCPS emphasized.
Another issue KUCCPS pointed out is applying for only one programme and leaving the other three choices empty.
This significantly lowers the chances of being placed, as it limits the student’s opportunities to just one course.
Additionally, some students make the mistake of selecting the same course in all four slots. KUCCPS discouraged this practice, especially for highly competitive programmes such as medicine, nursing, and engineering. Repeating the same course in all options is risky and can reduce the chances of being placed.
The fifth mistake students often make is choosing only one course in a single institution. KUCCPS advised that applicants should consider multiple institutions to increase their placement chances, instead of putting all hopes on just one place.
Another common error is arranging course choices randomly. KUCCPS advised students to carefully rank their preferred courses in order of priority, starting with the most preferred choice in the first position and the least preferred in the fourth. A well-organized list improves the chances of getting a desirable placement.
Finally, students were warned not to use their mobile money transaction ID when submitting their application.
Instead, they must use their eCitizen account, which is made up of letters and is shown in the middle of the payment confirmation SMS. Using the correct account ensures the payment and application are correctly linked.
This important advisory from KUCCPS comes just under two weeks after the student application portal was officially opened on March 28, allowing 2024 KCSE candidates to apply for university and college placements.
For those who may be struggling or unsure of how to go about the application process, KUCCPS has set up help centres in all 47 counties. Some of the support centres include Alupe University (Busia), Baringo National Polytechnic (Baringo), Maseno University (Kisumu), Technical University of Mombasa (Mombasa), and Karen Institute for the Deaf (Nairobi). These centres are available to guide students through the process and help them make informed decisions.
KUCCPS encourages all applicants to be extra careful and follow all the steps correctly to increase their chances of getting placed in their preferred courses and institutions.
