Two Die in Crash While Heading to ODM Elections in Homa Bay
Two people died on Monday, April 7, while traveling to take part in the ODM grassroots elections. The victims were riding on a motorcycle that collided with a lorry near Arujo Bridge on the Homa Bay-Rongo road in Homa Bay Town Constituency.
According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, the motorcycle was carrying three people when it was hit head-on by a lorry belonging to a courier service company.
The crash left two of the riders dead, while the third is currently receiving treatment in critical condition at a local hospital.
One of the passengers died instantly at the scene due to the impact, while the other passed away later in the hospital while undergoing emergency treatment. Police said he had sustained several severe fractures.
Homa Bay Sub-county Police Commander Emmanuel Kiplagat confirmed the tragic details, saying the driver of the lorry miscalculated while trying to overtake another vehicle on the narrow bridge.
“The driver of the lorry veered to the right side of the road in an attempt to overtake, but he misjudged the distance between him and the approaching motorcycle,” said Kiplagat.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact identities of the deceased, as neither of them had any identification documents on them at the time of the accident, police noted.
This incident adds to a disturbing trend of fatal road accidents being reported across the region, especially during busy political or holiday periods.
Just a day earlier, on Sunday evening, another tragic accident in Siaya County claimed the lives of four members from the same family.
The victims died after their car crashed into a stalled school bus along the Siaya-Nyadorera Road at Uranga. All four died at the scene.
Coincidentally, both accidents in Homa Bay happened as the victims were heading to participate in the ongoing ODM grassroots elections. The local party elections in the region have been marred by unrest and unfortunate events.
In a separate but related incident earlier the same day, two young men from Ndhiwa Constituency in Homa Bay sustained serious injuries during violent clashes involving rival groups. These fights were also connected to the grassroots elections.
One of the youths reportedly had his left wrist chopped off during the chaos, while the other suffered deep cuts on his neck and a broken arm.
Authorities are now concerned about the growing tensions and increasing violence tied to the election process.
As ODM continues with its grassroots polls, there are growing calls for improved security and better management of the election process to prevent further loss of life and injuries.
