Tension and violence erupted at the Machakos County Assembly following the controversial impeachment of Speaker Anne Kiusya.
The situation turned chaotic as Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) loyal to Kiusya clashed with those supporting her removal.
The division comes amid growing speculation of an ongoing plan to impeach Governor Wavinya Ndeti.
The conflict deepened after Deputy Speaker Stephen Mwanthi publicly accused Speaker Kiusya of mismanaging public funds and failing to account for how money has been spent within the Assembly.
“For more than two and a half years, the Speaker has not provided any explanation or documentation showing how the Assembly’s money is used,” Mwanthi said.
“There are no financial records available, and whenever we demand accountability, she tells us to focus our oversight elsewhere. But according to the law, she is required to present that information to us annually.”
Mwanthi went on to say that Kiusya’s actions are a clear violation of both the law and the Constitution of Kenya. He added that many members no longer support her leadership and believe she should resign.
The confrontation turned violent, and during the chaos, several people were injured. Deputy Speaker Mwanthi revealed that Matungulu MCA Lucky Nzau was hurt and is currently receiving treatment. He also confirmed that Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka and Mwanthi himself suffered injuries during the scuffle.
“We were in her office when she attempted to force some motions through without our agreement,” Mwanthi explained. “Things escalated when MCAs opposed to her actions reacted strongly.”
Majority Leader Nzioka emphasized that all motions must be reviewed and approved by the Assembly’s Business Committee.
He described how one MCA pulled Kiusya’s chair in protest after disagreeing with her decision, which led to her falling down.
“Some of us were only trying to defend ourselves,” Nzioka said. “You can’t fix poor leadership with more poor leadership. She needs to resign so we can replace her with someone more competent and capable.”
The dramatic scenes at the Assembly came just a day after a heated verbal exchange between Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti and Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, her political rival and predecessor.
Tensions between the two have been growing as they vie for political dominance in the vote-rich Ukambani region.
Governor Wavinya is currently facing an impeachment threat led by Muthwani Ward MCA Dominic Maitha, a close ally of Mutua. On Sunday, April 6, Wavinya publicly accused the CS of meddling in Machakos County politics.
“Mutua, you are no longer the governor of Machakos. Stop interfering and let me govern,” she said firmly.
As political battles intensify within the county, the leadership crisis at the Assembly highlights deeper divisions among the region’s top leaders, raising concerns over governance and stability in Machakos.
