The National Assembly has taken serious action against nominated EALA Member of Parliament Falhada Iman by suspending her from Parliament premises for three months.
This comes after a video of her engaging in a physical altercation with nominated MP Umulkher Harun Mohamed went viral, sparking public debate and concern.
On Wednesday, April 9, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula addressed the matter in the House.
He confirmed that Falhada Iman would no longer be allowed access to Parliament buildings or any of its facilities for the next 90 days.
However, there is an exception—she will be permitted to enter Parliament only on the day she is scheduled to present her written apology. On that day, she must be escorted by the Sergeant-at-Arms.
“Honourable Falhada is, therefore, excluded from accessing Parliament buildings and facilities for a period of 90 days, except for the specific date and time when she will present her written explanation.
On that occasion, she will be escorted by the Sergeant-at-Arms,” Wetangula announced in the afternoon sitting.
In contrast, Speaker Wetangula showed some leniency toward MP Umulkher Harun. Since she is a sitting member of Parliament, she will be given an opportunity to explain her side of the story and issue an apology to the House before any disciplinary decision is made.
“Given that this altercation involved a current sitting member and a former member, I believe it is fair to allow Honourable Harun the chance to speak to the matter first.
She will be allowed to present her explanation and apologize to the House,” the Speaker explained.
Speaker Wetangula also warned that further disciplinary measures could follow, depending on the contents and sincerity of the written apologies from both MPs.
He indicated that the House leadership would make additional decisions once all explanations have been received and evaluated.
Furthermore, the Speaker raised concerns about the video recording of the fight, which has been widely circulated on social media.
He cautioned MPs against recording such incidents within Parliament, adding that the person who filmed the altercation could also face disciplinary action.
“The recording of this incident is said to have been done by a sitting member of this House. If this claim turns out to be true, then that individual will also face appropriate sanctions under the Parliament Powers and Privileges Act Cap 6,” Wetangula stated.
Following the incident, MP Umulkher Harun spoke out on social media on the evening of Tuesday, April 8. In her statement, she accused Falhada Iman of launching an unprovoked attack against her.
Harun claimed that the EALA MP has had long-standing differences with her and that the confrontation was a complete surprise.
“My colleague from the EALA, who has had issues with my work for quite some time, acted in a way that was completely unacceptable.
She came to Parliament with the intention to attack me. I was caught off guard and left wondering what I had done to deserve such an ambush,” she wrote on Facebook.
She also expressed disappointment with how the situation unfolded.
Falhada Iman also responded to the incident by expressing deep regret. She admitted that what happened was inappropriate and not in line with the standards expected from Members of Parliament.
“I truly regret how things turned out. The incident was far below the dignity of the House and the expectations of the Kenyan people who placed their trust in us,” Iman said.
The public and the House now await the next steps, which will depend on the outcomes of the MPs’ apologies and any further investigations by the leadership of Parliament.
