A Super Metro Sacco matatu was involved in a road accident on Thursday night, just weeks after the company resumed operations following a recent suspension.
According to a video shared with Newshub.co.ke, the accident happened at around 11 pm as the matatu was traveling from Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) to Thika.
The crash occurred near the Ruiru area when the driver failed to notice a lorry ahead and collided into it from behind.
Some passengers who spoke to Newshub.co.ke revealed that the driver had earlier warned them that he was feeling drowsy.
He had even requested the passengers to talk to him in an effort to help keep him awake. “The truck in front was moving slowly, and the driver didn’t see it in time. He ended up crashing into it,” one passenger explained.
The matatu driver sustained serious injuries to his legs and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital by well-wishers who responded quickly to the scene. Two passengers who were seated in the front suffered minor head injuries, while several others inside the vehicle experienced minor injuries due to the impact.
The crash was so severe that the front section of the matatu was badly damaged. Emergency responders had to pull apart the wreckage to free the injured driver from the vehicle.
This latest incident comes barely a month after another Super Metro vehicle was involved in a tragic case that shocked the public. In March, a passenger identified as Gilbert Thuo Kimani lost his life after allegedly being thrown out of a moving matatu along Thika Road.
Reports indicated that the conductor pushed him out during a heated disagreement over a Ksh 30 fare. Tragically, Kimani was run over by the same matatu, leading to his immediate death.
The horrifying event sparked widespread outrage and concern among Kenyans. As a result, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) suspended Super Metro’s operations on March 20, citing serious safety violations and non-compliance with transport regulations.
Following the suspension, NTSA ordered that more than 200 vehicles under the Super Metro Sacco undergo a thorough inspection. In addition, the authority required the Sacco to launch a comprehensive road safety education program for its staff and operators.
The latest accident has once again raised questions about road safety and the measures put in place to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
