Ruto Says His Son Is Studying to Support Harambee Stars

President William Ruto has shared that one of his sons is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Sports Management with the aim of helping improve Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars.

Speaking on Tuesday, April 15, at State House during the flagging off ceremony for the U-20 National Team, President Ruto said his son is very passionate about football and constantly encourages him to take steps to improve the sport in Kenya.

“I want to let you know that my own son is a big football fan. He keeps pushing me to do something for the game.

To show just how serious he is about it, he has gone ahead to study a Master’s in Sports Management because he wants to support the national team,” Ruto said.

He added that many young Kenyans, like his son, see real opportunities in sports, particularly football, and want to contribute to its growth. However, he did not disclose which of his sons is enrolled in the program.

A Master’s in Sports Management prepares students to take on leadership and administrative roles in the sports sector.

Those who graduate can work in a variety of areas, such as football clubs, national team management, organizing sports events, managing sports academies, sports media and journalism, or representing athletes as agents.

President Ruto also assured the country that the government is committed to supporting football through partnerships with the football federation. He said this is part of the reason why a new stadium is being constructed.

“That’s why we made the decision to build a stadium in Nairobi that will focus mainly on football, although it will also accommodate other sports. This new stadium will be located at Jamhuri,” he announced.

He further emphasized that it is time for Kenya to invest more in developing football and other sports. He revealed that the construction of Talanta Stadium in Jamhuri is underway.

This is a major development, especially considering it comes four decades after the construction of the Kasarani Stadium.

“We are now taking steps to grow football to a higher level. Talanta Stadium is already being built in Jamhuri, 40 years after Kasarani was completed.

And we’re not stopping there—we are also upgrading Kasarani by installing a canopy,” he stated.

The President said the government is also planning improvements for other major stadiums across the country, including Nyayo Stadium, Kakamega Stadium, and Kipchoge Keino Stadium, among others.

In addition, President Ruto mentioned that the Ministry of Sports is working on building 37 sports academies in various parts of Kenya to help nurture and develop young talent.

He said that 10 of these academies have already been advertised and the process to get them started is ongoing.
