Super Metro Ordered to Sack 269 Drivers Before Resuming Operations
Popular matatu sacco, Super Metro, has been directed by the Transport Licensing Appeals Board (TLAB) to immediately terminate the services of 269 drivers before it can resume its operations. This is one of eight strict conditions that the tribunal issued to the sacco.
According to the ruling, “The appellant (Super Metro) shall immediately disengage 269 drivers as per the list marked ‘SPM7’ annexed to the respondent’s replying affidavit sworn on 10th April 2025.”
These drivers were found to lack the necessary qualifications to operate public service vehicles.
These new directives were part of an official order released on Monday, April 14, just hours before Super Metro made a public announcement stating it would suspend its operations for three days in order to comply with the conditions.
In addition to firing the 269 unqualified drivers, the sacco has also been ordered to present 42 drivers who have committed overspeeding offences for mandatory retesting at the Likoni Driver Test Centre.
The tribunal also instructed Super Metro to bring in eight vehicles that were found to have issues related to speed limiters for a full compliance check at the Likoni Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre.
Furthermore, another 31 vehicles with previously identified inspection issues must also be taken back to the inspection centre for re-evaluation.
Updated compliance reports for all these vehicles must then be submitted to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
A fifth condition required the sacco to provide NTSA’s Director of Road Safety with documentation showing the minutes and attendance list from a road safety sensitisation meeting conducted for all its drivers.
This is part of the broader efforts to ensure that all drivers affiliated with the sacco have been properly educated on road safety standards.
Meanwhile, the earlier suspension orders issued on March 18 have been reinstated. This means Super Metro will not be allowed to operate any of its vehicles until all the newly issued directives are fully complied with.
“The appellant shall forthwith cease operations pending further orders upon confirmation of compliance with the terms of the orders herein,” read part of the tribunal’s ruling.
The case will be mentioned again on April 17 to verify whether Super Metro has fulfilled all the orders and to issue further directions.
In a statement released on Monday, Super Metro acknowledged the tribunal’s latest decision and announced the temporary suspension of its services for three days to give room for full compliance.
The sacco also assured the public that it was committed to meeting all requirements.
“Following a hearing with the Transport Licensing Appeals Board today, the Board has directed Super Metro Limited to suspend operations for the next three days to finalise the remaining compliance measures,” the statement said.
Super Metro further noted that they had already complied with 90 percent of the conditions that had been previously set during the March suspension.
“Super Metro Limited fully respects the decisions of the TLAB and the court. We are working diligently to address the outstanding compliance issues within the stipulated timeframe and will resume operations as soon as we receive approval from the relevant authorities,” the statement added.
This development has caused concern among commuters who rely heavily on Super Metro’s services, but the sacco has reassured the public that these steps are necessary to enhance safety and accountability in public transport.
