Kakamega Governor Blamed After Two Workers Die While Digging County Toilet
Residents of Navakholo in Kakamega County are pointing fingers at Governor Fernandes Barasa following the tragic death of two workers who lost their lives while digging a county toilet.
The two men were working on the toilet project on Tuesday night when the soil around them collapsed, burying them alive. Sadly, they could not be rescued in time and died at the scene.
Eyewitnesses say the accident happened suddenly, causing panic among nearby residents who rushed to help. Despite their efforts, the situation turned tragic.
“We heard people screaming. When we got outside, everyone was running to the scene. That’s when we found out the workers were trapped inside the collapsed toilet.
It was a heartbreaking moment,” said Rachae Nancy, one of the locals.
Residents are blaming the county government for being slow and unprepared in their response. They claim the county leadership failed to act quickly and effectively to save the trapped workers.
Instead of sending trained rescuers, the county is said to have dispatched firemen who lacked the skills and equipment to handle such a situation, making the situation worse.
The community is also accusing the county government of ignoring safety and construction regulations. They want to know why the site was not inspected properly before the toilet project began.
“The biggest problem here is the county government of Kakamega. How can they allow a toilet to be dug without first sending experts to check if the ground is safe? It’s pure negligence,” one angry resident complained.
Another added, “We’ve been asking them to hire young people who can help during such emergencies. How can you send a firetruck when people are buried in the mud? It makes no sense!”
The residents have strongly condemned Governor Barasa’s administration and are demanding accountability. They want answers and better leadership to avoid future disasters.
North Butsotso area Chief Wycliffe Kombo confirmed the tragic incident. He explained that the toilet construction had started just three days earlier, but the soil was too weak to hold, which led to the collapse.
One of the workers miraculously survived. He was rushed to Bushiri Health Centre, received treatment, and was later discharged.
The two deceased workers’ bodies were taken to Kakamega County Referral Hospital mortuary. As of now, Governor Fernandes Barasa has not issued any official statement regarding the incident.
