Gachagua Sets Sights on 2027 Presidential Race Amid Political Tensions
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has officially announced his intentions to run for president in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview with Weru TV on Sunday night, Gachagua addressed the ongoing rumors suggesting he was barred from contesting in the upcoming polls due to his 2024 impeachment.
He firmly dismissed the claims, emphasizing that the legal process regarding his impeachment is still underway and has not yet been finalized by the courts.
“Before my matter reaches the Supreme Court, I will have already vied for the presidency and won with a huge majority,” Gachagua confidently stated.
He explained that under Kenyan law, any individual is eligible to contest for political office as long as their case remains unresolved and has not been concluded by the highest court.
“The law in Kenya is clear: if your case is still pending and has not reached the Supreme Court, you have the full right to vie for any seat,” he added.
Gachagua also drew comparisons to other politicians, citing the case of John Waluke, who, despite facing a 74-year jail sentence, contested and won the Sirisia MP seat after being released on bond.
“John Waluke’s case was later overturned by the Court of Appeal. The law allows it. My case has not even properly started yet,” he emphasized.
When speaking about the crowded presidential race, Gachagua noted that several opposition figures have also expressed interest in the presidency.
These include Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, Party of Liberation and Prosperity (PLP) leader Martha Karua, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, all of whom have announced independent bids.
He insisted that even though each of them will continue to campaign individually, they would eventually come together to choose a single candidate to carry the opposition’s hopes into the 2027 elections.
“We will all campaign until the right moment comes. Then, we will sit down, evaluate what everyone brings to the table, and decide who is best suited to face off with Ruto,” he explained.
According to Gachagua, the goal is to ensure a strong united front capable of securing a decisive win. “We want to guarantee a 70+1 victory.
After discussions, we will issue a joint statement committing to stand behind one candidate, chosen from among us,” he said.
Gachagua further assured that even if he is not selected, he would still support the chosen candidate for the greater good.
His announcement comes just days after reports surfaced suggesting that a high-level opposition meeting was held at the Ichaweri home of former President Uhuru Kenyatta. Allegedly, most of the opposition hopefuls were invited — except for Gachagua.
Sources claim that Uhuru specifically ordered that Gachagua be excluded, with rumors swirling that the meeting was largely about fronting Fred Matiang’i as the Jubilee Party’s preferred presidential candidate.
Gachagua’s relationship with Uhuru has remained tense, particularly after his harsh criticisms of the former president during and after the 2022 general elections. However, Gachagua has reportedly been making efforts to repair the strained ties.
Looking ahead, Gachagua revealed that he will soon be launching his own political party, expected to be announced in May.
Reports suggest that former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi is set to play a key leadership role in this new formation.
