A university student’s impromptu performance of the song “Kasongo” during a formal event attended by President William Ruto has become a talking point across the nation.

The incident occurred at a recent official gathering where attendees were preparing for the rendition of the National Anthem.

Before the anthem could commence, the student stood up and began singing “Kasongo,” a classic Lingala track by Super Mazembe that has recently found new life as a satirical anthem among Kenyan youth.

The unexpected performance elicited a mix of reactions from the audience. Some attendees were momentarily taken aback by the deviation from protocol, while others couldn’t help but chuckle at the boldness of the act.

President Ruto, known for his composure, maintained a neutral expression throughout the episode.

“Kasongo,” originally a song about a woman pleading for her estranged husband’s return, has been repurposed in recent times to comment on political and social issues in Kenya.

Its catchy tune and relatable lyrics have made it a favorite among content creators and protestors alike.

This isn’t the first time “Kasongo” has intersected with political events. Earlier this year, President Ruto was seen dancing to the song during New Year’s celebrations at Kisii State Lodge, a moment that was widely shared and discussed on social media platforms.

The student’s rendition serves as a reminder of the evolving ways in which music and art are used to express societal sentiments.

While some view such acts as breaches of decorum, others see them as powerful statements reflecting the pulse of the nation.

As discussions continue, the incident underscores the dynamic relationship between art, politics, and public expression in Kenya’s vibrant democratic landscape.
