How Ksh9,000 and a Motorcycle Led to the Brutal Murder of Willis Ayieko

New revelations have surfaced about the chilling murder of businessman Willis Ayieko, pointing to a deadly scheme that revolved around a motorcycle and a payment of just Ksh9,000.

On Monday, May 26, a protected witness under the Witness Protection Agency gave detailed testimony in court through the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

The witness, who is part of the case against Ayieko’s suspected killers, disclosed that he was unknowingly involved in the abduction of the businessman after being paid Ksh9,000 to transport the alleged kidnappers.

The witness explained how he was approached by the first accused, who asked him to get a motorcycle for a mysterious job. He was told that he wouldn’t be required to do anything risky — only to provide a motorcycle and be on standby. The job, he said, was being arranged by another individual believed to be one of the key masterminds behind Ayieko’s murder. However, that mastermind is now dead.

According to the witness, the first accused gave him very limited information about the job. He was promised good pay and was only asked to make sure the motorcycle was fuelled and ready.

The witness added that he didn’t suspect anything sinister because he was not informed of the actual purpose of the task.

On October 18, 2024, the witness received a call from the accused, identified as Sisco, who asked him to confirm whether he had secured the motorcycle. After confirming, Sisco told him to meet at 5:30 p.m. in Dudi, a location in Siaya County.

However, the witness mentioned that his motorcycle was out of fuel, something Sisco quickly took care of. After fuelling up, the witness headed toward Dudi using the Kisian–Rabuor road. On the way, he was again called and redirected to Mutumbu Centre.

There, they met at Amigos Pub, where two men were already drinking. One of them was introduced to the witness as part of the operation — the same person who has since died and was previously accused in the case.

The witness was then told to follow a motorcycle carrying the second accused, who is also now deceased. As they moved along their route, they made a stop.

The first and second accused went into a dark area and returned with noticeable changes. The second accused was now dressed in a U.S. military-style jacket and had an AK-47 rifle. The first accused was in a black jacket and also visibly armed.

The group continued to a nearby homestead where a funeral was taking place. The witness was instructed to stay outside while the armed men went into the compound.

A short while later, they returned in a vehicle. The witness identified the person driving the vehicle as one of the accused.

They then drove along a rough murram road and stopped near a mud-walled house. Here, the witness saw the accused escorting a man whose head was covered with a sack and whose hands were tied behind his back. The first accused was armed and ordered the captive to keep moving.

Later that night, around 11:00 p.m., the first accused told the witness to take him to Kisumu so he could withdraw some money.

The following day, October 19, 2024, the accused returned in a pickup truck, collected all his belongings, and told the witness that he had found a job in Nairobi and was moving there.

Throughout this time, the witness claimed he had no idea that a murder had occurred. It was only after being arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) that he learned about the death of Ayieko.

Willis Ayieko, who worked as a Human Resources manager, had gone missing in October 2024. His lifeless body was discovered in Dudi Gem, Siaya County, nearly a week after his disappearance.

Earlier on the same day his body was found, his vehicle — a Ford Ranger — was located abandoned in Sabatia.

The last time Ayieko was seen alive was on Friday, October 18, 2024, in Gem, Siaya County, where he had travelled to attend a burial ceremony.

This gruesome case has shocked many, especially given the small amount of money — Ksh9,000 — that was allegedly paid to aid in the events leading to such a horrific crime.

Investigations into the full circumstances and those involved in the killing are ongoing as the trial continues.
