Raila Donates Land to Support Affordable Housing in Kisumu
ODM party leader Raila Odinga has generously donated five acres of his private land to the government to support the Affordable Housing Programme.
This was announced by President William Ruto during his visit to Kisumu City on Thursday, May 29, 2025, where he was set to officially hand over newly completed housing units.
Speaking to residents, President Ruto revealed that Raila’s donation would go a long way in helping the government construct homes for low-income earners in the lakeside city. He expressed his appreciation to Raila for the contribution, which he described as a significant boost to the government’s efforts to provide decent housing for all Kenyans.
“I am here with Raila, and I want to thank him because he has given us five acres of his personal land so we can build affordable homes. This way, the people of Kisumu can benefit from this housing initiative,” said President Ruto.
Raila, in his remarks, encouraged Kisumu residents to support President Ruto’s administration. He emphasized that by working together with the national government, the region could benefit more from the ongoing development projects.
The President is expected to lead the official launch of the first phase of the LAPFUND Makasembo Affordable Housing Project in Kisumu.
This event is part of his three-day tour of the Nyanza region, which comes just before the Madaraka Day celebrations scheduled to take place in Homa Bay County.
During this tour, President Ruto will also hand over keys to the new owners of the 910 housing units that have already been completed. These homes are part of the larger government plan to provide affordable and decent housing to Kenyans across the country.
The Affordable Housing Programme aims to build 200,000 housing units every year, with a long-term goal of completing 1 million homes within a five-year period. As of April 2025, around 140,000 units had already been completed.
The most recent batch of 5,000 houses attracted over 500,000 interested applicants who registered through the Boma Yangu platform.
Kenyans who wish to benefit from this government initiative are encouraged to register on the Boma Yangu platform. By saving consistently and staying informed about new housing projects, they can increase their chances of securing a home.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura also noted that applicants who have saved for a longer period under the Affordable Housing Programme and those with larger families will be given priority during the allocation of the houses once they are ready for occupancy.
This collaborative approach between political leaders and the government is seen as a positive step towards addressing Kenya’s housing needs and uplifting the lives of ordinary citizens, especially in urban and low-income areas.
