Kenyan content creators are calling on the government to reverse its latest decision to ban celebrities, influencers, and digital content creators from promoting gambling.
The directive, which was issued without prior engagement with key stakeholders, has sparked criticism from those in the creative and advertising industries.
Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, members of the Digital Content Creators Association of Kenya (DCCAK) expressed their disappointment, accusing the government of sidelining them in the decision-making process. They insisted that the ban was issued without meaningful consultation, despite their role as major players in the digital economy.
According to the association, content creators have consistently followed the rules set by the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) and have complied with both local and international standards for advertising.
They emphasized that many creators actively promote responsible gambling and ensure that they only work with verified and licensed betting companies.
“We are deeply concerned about the lack of consultation with stakeholders before issuing this directive,” the creators stated.
“The blanket suspension of influencers from participating in gambling promotions is unfair and disregards our contribution to the industry.”
They further noted that DCCAK, which represents digital influencers and content creators nationwide, was not involved in the discussions leading to the directive.
This, they said, was unacceptable given their crucial role in shaping the digital advertising space in Kenya.
The content creators also defended their professionalism, saying that most of them maintain high ethical standards when promoting products or services, including those related to gambling.
They argued that banning them from such campaigns undermines the disciplined approach they have always taken in their work.
They stressed the importance of involving them in policy decisions that affect the digital and creative sectors, especially since they serve as key channels for reaching younger audiences in the online space.
To resolve the impasse, the association has formally requested an urgent meeting with officials from BCLB, the Office of the Attorney General, and other relevant bodies.
They are seeking a platform to discuss the matter in depth and find a collaborative path forward.
Additionally, the creators expressed their willingness to work closely with BCLB and other industry stakeholders to develop clear and responsible guidelines for digital gambling promotions.
They said they are ready to contribute creatively and constructively to ensure responsible gambling messaging reaches the right audiences.
“We would gladly partner with BCLB on its ‘Chukua Control’ initiative,” the association noted, “and use our digital platforms and creative skills to expand its reach, especially among the youth who make up a large portion of our audience.”
This statement came just hours after BCLB officially barred influencers and public figures from participating in gambling advertisements across media platforms.
The directive is seen as a major blow to many content creators and celebrities who have depended on the gambling industry for a steady source of income.
