Kenyans living and working abroad now have a clear path to owning homes in Kenya through the government’s Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).
The government has officially launched a dedicated online platform that enables diaspora Kenyans to register, save, apply for homes, and monitor their housing investments remotely—all from wherever they are in the world.
During a high-level meeting held on Thursday, June 5, Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga and Diaspora Affairs PS Roseline Njogu discussed how to make affordable housing accessible to Kenyans abroad.
The meeting came in response to the growing interest shown by the diaspora in being part of the Boma Yangu initiative—a government-backed scheme designed to make homeownership more accessible and affordable.
“The discussions focused on developing strategies to ensure that Kenyans living overseas can easily participate in the Boma Yangu programme, especially now that interest from the diaspora community has surged,” a statement from the Diaspora Affairs State Department confirmed.
🏡 How It Works for Diaspora Kenyans
The government has developed a diaspora-specific portal under the Boma Yangu platform. Here’s how diaspora Kenyans can secure homes through this initiative:
✅ 1. Register on the Portal
- Kenyans abroad can now sign up through the official Boma Yangu diaspora portal.
- Registration is simple, and applicants will get a unique identification number used to track all housing-related transactions.
💰 2. Begin Saving Toward a Home
- After registration, participants begin saving through the Boma Yangu platform.
- Once the amount saved equals at least 10% of the value of the chosen housing unit (the required deposit), they become eligible for home allocation.
🏘️ 3. Select a Preferred Housing Unit
- Through the portal, users can browse available housing units across different counties.
- Units come in various sizes and categories—social, affordable, and low-cost—so applicants can choose what fits their budget and lifestyle.
📄 4. Allocation Process
- Home allocations are based on a transparent and fair “first-past-the-post” system. This means the earliest to meet the requirements gets priority.
- Once allocated a unit, the applicant receives a letter of offer and must accept it before moving on to payment.
💳 5. Complete the Purchase
Applicants can choose one of two ways to pay the remaining balance:
- Outright purchase (full cash payment).
- Mortgage financing, once prequalified by a partner bank.
Upon confirming payment terms, applicants sign a sale agreement, formalizing the purchase process.
📬 6. Receive Ownership Documents
- After construction is complete and the unit is ready for occupation, the homeowner is issued a title deed or lease document.
- The property is then ready for possession and occupation.
📊 Programme Progress and Targets
The Affordable Housing Programme is part of the Kenyan government’s broader plan to deliver 150,000 new housing units across the country. So far, the government has successfully completed over 11,000 units, and many more are under various stages of construction.
🌍 Why This Matters for Diaspora Kenyans
For decades, many Kenyans abroad have struggled with unreliable developers, land scams, and unclear legal processes. Now, through the government’s Boma Yangu diaspora portal, they have access to a secure, transparent, and government-managed housing system.
With the Affordable Housing Programme now extended to include the diaspora community, Kenyans living overseas finally have a safe and structured opportunity to invest in real estate back home.
Whether you’re planning to settle in Kenya in the future or just want a piece of home to call your own, this programme offers a reliable, affordable, and government-supported way to do it.
