Engineer and Academic Leader Remembered for His Contributions to Education and Community Development
John Thoya Maitha, the son of the late former Cabinet Minister Karisa Maitha, has passed away. His death has been met with grief and tributes from top leaders, especially from Kenya’s Coast region, who remembered him not only as a distinguished academic but also as a passionate community servant.
Thoya, who was a trained engineer, held a significant position at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), where he worked as a senior lecturer.
He also served as the Deputy Director at the university’s Renewable Energy and Climate Change Research Centre, where he contributed to groundbreaking research in renewable technologies and environmental sustainability.
The exact cause of his death has not yet been made public, but his passing has left a deep void in both academic and community circles.
Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya expressed heartfelt condolences to the Maitha family, praising Thoya for his immense contribution to engineering education and the Blue Economy sector in higher learning institutions.
“I offer my sincere sympathies to the family of the late Hon. Karisa Maitha and Mama Rachel Maitha on the untimely death of their beloved son, Engineer John Thoya Maitha.
He was also the brother to Juney Karisa, who heads Public Communication at the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports,” Mvurya stated.
In his tribute, Mvurya further praised Thoya for being an exemplary mentor who used his skills and experience to uplift youth and empower local communities through education and innovation.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi also joined in mourning Thoya, highlighting his lasting impact on young people and his commitment to uplifting those at the grassroots level.
Kingi noted that Thoya’s legacy of selfless service, especially in mentoring youth and championing local development initiatives, mirrored that of his late father.
“Engineer Thoya was not only a scholar but a guiding light for many in his community. His humility and dedication inspired the next generation to strive for greatness and give back to society,” Kingi remarked.
Thoya’s father, Karisa Maitha, was a popular and powerful political figure in Kenya’s Coast region, well remembered for his time in the government of the late President Mwai Kibaki.
A man of humble beginnings, Maitha started his career as a clinical officer before rising through the ranks to become a key Cabinet Minister, famously heading both the Ministry of Local Government and later the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife.
Maitha’s political journey began in 1979, when he was elected as a councillor for Mwakirunge ward. His political star continued to rise, and he became the Member of Parliament for Kisauni in 1992.
After being re-elected in 1997, he broke ranks with the ruling KANU party and joined President Kibaki’s Democratic Party (DP), where he played a founding role. When Kibaki took power in 2002, Maitha was appointed as the Minister for Local Government.
During his tenure, Maitha quickly gained a reputation for his bold and swift actions, earning the nickname “Hurricane Maitha” due to his no-nonsense leadership style and frequent dismissals of corrupt or underperforming officials.
He was later moved to the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, where he tragically passed away in the line of duty. On August 25, 2004, Maitha died of a heart attack while on an official trip in Germany. At the time, he was 50 years old.
He collapsed while speaking in a phone interview with a German radio station and was rushed to a hospital in Frankfurt, but doctors were unable to save him.
Maitha had travelled to Germany as the head of a high-level delegation promoting Kenya as a leading global tourism destination.
His sudden death shocked the nation, cutting short a vibrant political career filled with bold reforms and a deep passion for public service.
Now, years later, the passing of his son John Thoya Maitha is being mourned across the country, with many recognising his quiet but powerful contributions to academia, youth mentorship, and environmental innovation.
His legacy, like his father’s, is one of leadership, dedication, and service to the nation.
