At least two people have been confirmed dead, and many others sustained injuries after a Metrotrans Sacco matatu was involved in a devastating road accident on the morning of Monday, June 9, along Kiambu Road.
The tragic crash took place near AAR Hospital, causing panic and drawing the attention of passersby and emergency responders who rushed to help.
Eyewitness accounts and initial reports shared with Kenyans.co.ke indicate that the ill-fated public service vehicle (PSV), affiliated with Metrotrans Sacco, was heading towards the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters when the driver allegedly lost control.
The vehicle veered off the road and overturned, leading to multiple injuries and fatalities.
Medical teams from the nearby AAR Hospital responded promptly, arriving at the crash site within minutes to administer emergency treatment and help evacuate the injured to healthcare facilities.
The accident scene quickly attracted a large crowd of onlookers who surrounded the wreckage as first responders worked diligently to rescue victims.
Photos and videos shared widely across social media platforms painted a grim picture. The matatu was seen toppled on its side, its body heavily damaged—suggesting a high-impact crash.
The rear window appeared to be missing, possibly shattered on impact or forcefully removed by survivors and concerned citizens trying to pull trapped passengers from the vehicle.
Though investigations are ongoing, the exact cause of the accident has not yet been established. However, traffic experts and road safety advocates have long warned about the dangers of this particular stretch of Kiambu Road—especially between the DCI offices and the Karura Forest area.
The road is known for its sharp curves, steep gradients, and blind spots, which make it a hazardous section, particularly when drivers are speeding or fail to observe caution.
Authorities have consistently advised motorists to slow down and stay alert when using this road. Due to the winding nature and steep slopes, vehicles can easily lose control, especially under wet or slippery conditions or when drivers misjudge turns.
Later that day, tensions escalated further along Kiambu Road following protests near Ridgeways. Angry residents lit bonfires and blocked sections of the road, prompting a strong response from the police, who were deployed to manage the situation.
While it’s still unclear whether the protests were directly related to the accident, the two incidents caused significant traffic disruptions, with long snarl-ups reported as motorists tried to navigate around the chaos.
These back-to-back events brought most of Kiambu Road to a standstill, leaving many commuters stranded and deepening the public outcry over road safety and poor enforcement of transport regulations.
Shockingly, the Kiambu Road crash was the second fatal PSV accident reported in under 24 hours. On Sunday, another deadly accident occurred in Keroka, Nyamira County. In that incident, a passenger van collided with two motorcycles along a hilly stretch between Ichuni and Keroka town.
The Nairobi-bound matatu had picked up passengers from towns along the Kilgoris–Nyangusu–Gesusu–Masimba route before losing control on a steep slope under unclear circumstances.
Eyewitnesses said the Keroka crash happened around 11 a.m. on a section of road notorious for its steep incline. As with the Kiambu Road crash, early indicators point to the driver possibly losing control while navigating the dangerous slope.
The two incidents have reignited urgent calls from road safety campaigners and members of the public for stricter regulation of PSV operations, comprehensive driver training programs, and regular road safety audits to identify and fix high-risk areas across the country.
As investigations continue into the cause of the Kiambu Road tragedy, families of the victims are still seeking answers.
Meanwhile, Kenyans on social media and beyond are expressing deep concern over the rising number of fatal road accidents, especially involving public transport vehicles, and are demanding accountability and reforms to prevent further loss of life.
