Ruto Orders Full Investigation into Blogger Albert Ojwang’s Death in Police Custody
President William Ruto has finally spoken out regarding the controversial death of blogger Albert Ojwang, who died while being held in police custody.
The President has instructed the National Police Service (NPS) to fully support the ongoing investigations into the incident and to work closely with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to establish the truth.
In a public statement issued by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, Ruto emphasized the importance of a transparent and credible investigation into the matter.
He made it clear that the police must do everything possible to help IPOA uncover the events that led to Ojwang’s mysterious death.
“I call on the National Police Service to fully cooperate with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority and ensure that the investigation into Ojwang’s death is swift, transparent, and credible,” Ruto said.
The President also urged the public to remain patient as the investigation continues. He discouraged people from jumping to conclusions or spreading speculation that could interfere with the investigative process. “As we mourn the loss of Albert Ojwang, we must vigilantly observe how the investigation unfolds, without making hasty assumptions that may affect the outcome,” he added.
Ruto further mentioned that he expects to receive a comprehensive report on what exactly happened to the blogger, along with clear details of the measures that will be taken based on the investigation’s findings. “I expect the truth behind Ojwang’s death to come out eventually, and I believe justice will be delivered.”
In a stern warning to the police, President Ruto reminded officers of their critical role in safeguarding people placed under their custody. He insisted that once the police detain someone, it becomes their responsibility to ensure that individual’s safety, security, and general welfare.
“Every police officer must understand that taking a person into custody comes with a huge responsibility. They must do everything within their power to protect that person’s life and treat them with dignity,” Ruto stressed.
Reflecting on his earlier reforms, Ruto noted that granting financial and institutional independence to the police was meant to help the force become more professional, efficient, and accountable.
He pointed out that with that freedom comes the responsibility to eliminate bad practices, misconduct, and abuse of power within the police ranks.
“The police must take a strong stance against crime and lawlessness, but at the same time, they must also deal firmly with corruption, misconduct, and unprofessional actions within their own system,” the President stated.
President Ruto also made it clear that he had no involvement in any crackdown targeting Ojwang and expressed deep shock after learning about the circumstances surrounding his death. He distanced himself from any political or operational decisions that may have led to the tragedy.
“This heartbreaking event, which appears to have occurred at the hands of the police, is unacceptable. I strongly condemn any actions or negligence—whether by individuals or the system—that may have played a role in causing Ojwang’s untimely death,” Ruto remarked.
The calls for justice grew louder after IPOA revealed disturbing developments in the case. According to Ann Wanjiku, the Deputy Chairperson of IPOA, crucial CCTV footage from the office of the Central Police Station’s Officer Commanding Station (OCS) had been tampered with.
She disclosed this information while speaking before the Senate, raising serious concerns about a potential cover-up in the case.
As investigations continue, Kenyans are watching closely, hoping for answers and demanding accountability for the tragic loss of a young man whose voice was silenced while in the care of those meant to protect him.
