President William Ruto made a personal phone call to the family of the late blogger Albert Ojwang to express his heartfelt condolences, according to new information shared by the deceased’s father.
Meshack Ojwang, the father of the late Albert, disclosed on Monday, June 16, that the President reached out to him directly to offer his sympathies after the tragic death of his son.
Meshack had just returned to their home in Homa Bay after spending a week in Nairobi, where he had initially gone to search for his missing son, only to be met with the devastating news of his death.
Albert Ojwang was confirmed dead on Saturday, June 8. His mysterious death has since triggered widespread attention and prompted intervention from top government officials, including the President himself.
Speaking with emotion, Meshack Ojwang thanked President Ruto for treating his son like one of his own.
He shared that the President’s phone call deeply touched him, particularly because it came at a time when many other families across the country are grieving young lives lost.
“I want to thank the President for treating my son like his own child,” Meshack said. “Many young people have died in recent days, even just yesterday and today.
But despite all that, the President chose to feel my pain and personally called to share his condolences. I truly appreciate that from the bottom of my heart.”
Meshack returned to Homa Bay on Sunday, June 15, following a difficult week in Nairobi. According to local customs, he had the responsibility to officially inform fellow villagers of his son’s passing.
In the days following the tragedy, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga paid a visit to Meshack at his home.
During the visit, she disclosed that in addition to his personal phone call, President Ruto had also sent financial assistance of Ksh2 million to the bereaved family to help them during this difficult time.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga also stepped in with a financial donation of Ksh1 million to the family. Meanwhile, the Homa Bay County government has announced plans to build a two-bedroom house for the family of the late blogger as part of efforts to provide long-term support.
Support for the family has continued to grow. On Sunday, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja offered a permanent and pensionable job to the widow of the late Albert Ojwang.
Sakaja had earlier promised to mobilize his friends and colleagues to help the family purchase a plot of land in Homa Bay, where they plan to build rental units that will provide a steady source of income for Ojwang’s parents.
As the family tries to come to terms with the loss and seeks justice for Albert, developments in the murder case have taken a dramatic turn.
On Monday, Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat voluntarily stepped aside from his role to pave the way for an independent and thorough investigation into the killing.
The family remains hopeful that the truth will come out, and that justice will be served as authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the blogger’s tragic death.
