Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Babu Owino, has disclosed that his official security has been withdrawn by the government.
He linked this sudden move to his active participation in the June 25 protests, which took place just a day before his statement on Thursday, June 26.
In a strongly worded statement, Owino condemned the government’s action, calling it an attack on democracy and a clear example of intimidation against those who speak up for ordinary citizens.
“On June 25, I stood in solidarity with the people of Kenya. My actions were not against the country, but in defense of its future. I took part in a peaceful protest to express dissatisfaction with a government that continues to fail its people,” Owino said.
The vocal MP revealed that in response to his participation in the demonstrations, the government had retaliated by withdrawing his assigned bodyguards.
He described this as a targeted attempt to silence elected leaders who dare to support the public’s grievances.
By revoking his security, Owino claimed that the government was revealing its fear of transparency and accountability. “This is not the action of a government that serves the people—it is the action of one that fears scrutiny,” he added.
Exclusive video footage obtained by Newshub.co.ke captured scenes of Babu Owino arriving at the protests in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD), where he was warmly welcomed by a crowd of enthusiastic youth.
The demonstrators lifted him shoulder-high in a show of appreciation, singing and dancing as they moved through the streets.
The protests were held to honour the memory of young Kenyans, mostly Gen Z, who tragically lost their lives during the previous year’s demonstrations against the Finance Bill.
This year’s protests, which unfolded in various parts of the country, resulted in violent confrontations between police and protesters.
Police forces tried to stop the protests from escalating into chaos, but the clashes left at least 11 people dead and many others nursing injuries.
Several grieving families who had lost loved ones in last year’s protests voiced their frustration after being blocked by heightened security measures, which prevented them from delivering petitions to Parliament.
Despite the personal risk and the withdrawal of his security, Babu Owino remained firm in his commitment to defend the rights of Kenyans.
He insisted that his true protection came from the people themselves. “I am not afraid of intimidation.
I will not be silenced. My voice, along with the voices of Kenyans demanding justice, fairness, and freedom, will only grow stronger,” he declared.
Owino further encouraged fellow leaders to stand their ground and not be intimidated by oppressive tactics. He emphasized that citizens must remain vigilant and continue holding those in power accountable.
“To all Kenyans: remain united, stay alert, and remember—your leaders work for you. They should not threaten those who walk with you.
The truth cannot be buried, and this movement for justice and better leadership cannot be stopped,” he concluded.
In recent months, Babu Owino has been more vocal about his political ambitions, hinting at plans to pursue higher office in the next general election.
He has also been a fierce critic of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, often questioning the management and leadership of Kenya’s capital city.
