Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has blamed the widespread destruction and looting during the June 25 protests on criminals who were allegedly hired to cause chaos.
Speaking to the media on Thursday afternoon after visiting parts of Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), Murkomen described the protests not as a peaceful demonstration but as a well-organized and violent attempt to overthrow President William Ruto’s administration.
Murkomen went as far as to call the protests a form of terrorism disguised as political dissent. He claimed that the violence was pre-planned and funded with the intention of disrupting the government and destabilizing the country.
“There was nothing peaceful about those demonstrations,” Murkomen stated. “What we witnessed was pure violence, destruction, looting, and even sexual assaults committed by individuals hiding behind the mask of peaceful protest. It was outright anarchy.
What happened was not a lawful protest but an illegal, unconstitutional move aimed at toppling a legally elected government. The police acted to stop what can only be described as an attempted coup,” he added.
The Interior CS revealed that these criminals were not just targeting businesses and innocent civilians, but also police officers.
He disclosed that there was an attempt to steal guns and police uniforms. In Kiambu County, Murkomen confirmed that firearms were stolen from two police stations during the chaos.
He also reported that government offices—including those of the judiciary, national government, and county governments—were attacked, looted, and even set on fire. Businesses across the country suffered massive losses, with property worth billions of shillings destroyed or stolen.
“The attackers didn’t just go for big businesses. They looted kiosks, supermarkets, electronics shops, hotels, and restaurants. Even residential areas were not spared. One property belonging to the Catholic Church in Embu County was set ablaze,” Murkomen said.
He also highlighted that the homes and businesses belonging to Members of Parliament who support the government were among the main targets. Properties owned by Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah and Molo MP Kimani Kuria were reportedly attacked in the chaos.
According to Murkomen, these events were far from spontaneous. He insisted that the riots were carefully planned and funded by political forces aiming to create a national crisis.
To ensure such violence does not happen again, Murkomen announced that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a major probe into the people who organized, financed, and incited the unrest.
“The government will not rest until justice is served for all Kenyans who were affected by the violence. We will pursue the perpetrators without fear or favour.
It does not matter how powerful or wealthy they are—no one will be spared,” Murkomen concluded.
