A night that began with partying and drinking ended in tragedy after a drunk police officer opened fire in a nightclub, killing his wife and another man in what is believed to be a love triangle gone wrong.
The shocking incident happened on the night of Thursday, June 26, during a night of celebration. According to reports, the officer became furious after learning that his lover was secretly involved with another man.
The revelation triggered a violent reaction, leading him to fire multiple shots inside the busy nightclub.
The police officer, a constable, was reportedly drunk and in possession of an AK-47 rifle, which he used to shoot both his lover and her alleged new partner.
Panic broke out among the revellers as gunshots rang through the venue, with many scrambling for safety while others alerted nearby police stations.
Eyewitnesses say the officer attempted to escape the scene using a motorcycle. However, his escape was cut short after police officers, including the Turbo Sub County Police Commander and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), quickly responded and arrested him.
Officers managed to disarm him and recovered the rifle, which still had 20 rounds of ammunition in it.
Initial investigations revealed that the pub where the tragic incident occurred was owned by the officer’s lover. The woman was reportedly living with the other man, something that may have fueled the officer’s rage and actions that night.
According to the police report, the constable had been issued the firearm earlier that night for official duties. Instead of going to work, he diverted and headed to the pub on a motorbike, where he committed the crime.
Amid the chaos during the shooting, another man was accidentally hit by a stray bullet. He sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received medical attention and is currently recovering.
The bodies of the two victims—the officer’s lover and the other man—were taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where post-mortem examinations are expected to be conducted as part of the investigation.
The suspect is now in custody as police begin a full investigation into the events that led to the double homicide inside the entertainment venue.
This is not the first time such an incident involving police officers has shocked the country. In recent years, there has been a worrying rise in cases of police officers misusing their firearms during personal or emotional disputes.
In one incident last year, terrified revellers at Imperial Lounge in Yatta, Machakos County, ran for their lives after a police officer fired 30 bullets from his AK-47 in a fit of rage over a romantic disagreement.
The disturbing event happened in the early hours of Friday, December 27, even as the officer’s seniors watched.
In another incident in February this year, a police officer fatally shot his colleague after a quarrel as they were leaving a Nairobi club.
Similarly, in March, officers attached to Gigiri Police Station were caught in a horrifying situation when one of their own allegedly opened fire on fellow officers. The Sunday, March 9, shooting led to the death of one officer and left another injured.
These tragic events have raised serious concerns about mental health, emotional stability, and responsible firearm use within the police service.
Authorities are now being urged to put stricter controls in place to prevent such tragedies and protect both officers and civilians alike.
