The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a new weather advisory listing various parts of the country, including Nairobi, as areas expected to face extremely cold weather for the next five days.
In a detailed weekend update, Kenya Met Director David Gikungu advised Kenyans to prepare for chilly nights, with temperatures expected to drop as low as 6°C in many regions.
Nairobi, which falls under the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, was mentioned among the areas expected to experience these cold conditions.
Other counties in this region set to endure similar low temperatures include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi.
These areas are all likely to experience nights as cold as 6°C throughout the five-day forecast period, including the weekend.
Meanwhile, in contrast to the cold conditions expected in the highlands, the North Eastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are forecast to experience much hotter conditions. According to Gikungu, maximum daytime temperatures in these counties are expected to rise to 37°C.
A similar trend of high daytime temperatures is also expected in parts of the Northwestern region, especially in counties such as Turkana and Samburu, where the maximum temperatures will reach around 36°C.
However, despite the high temperatures during the day, these areas will also face chilly nights. Northwestern counties may see nighttime temperatures drop to around 7°C, while those in the North Eastern region could experience nights with temperatures as low as 16°C.
In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and much of the central Rift Valley, Gikungu noted that residents should brace for cold nights, with temperatures also dropping to about 6°C. During the day, these areas are expected to warm up to about 29°C. Counties expected to experience these conditions include Siaya, Kisumu,
Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, and Kakamega.
As Kenya transitions into the colder season, the meteorological department is urging the public to take caution, especially with the likely rise in respiratory infections due to the cold and foggy weather expected in many areas.
Nonetheless, not all regions will face freezing conditions. The forecast highlighted that coastal counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, along with the coastal parts of Tana River County, will have warmer weather.
These areas are expected to experience nighttime temperatures of about 21°C and daytime highs of around 31°C.
In the South-Eastern lowlands, including counties such as Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland parts of Tana River County, nighttime temperatures will be slightly lower, averaging around 12°C, while daytime temperatures will climb to around 29°C.
Gikungu also stated that several regions should expect rainfall over the forecast period. Rain is expected in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley itself, as well as in parts of Northwestern Kenya like Turkana and Samburu, and along the Coast.
According to the forecast, the rainfall is likely to intensify starting Sunday, particularly in the western and northwestern parts of the country.
For residents in Nairobi and surrounding areas, the department forecasted light rain and showers, mostly accompanied by cloudy weather that will occasionally give way to sunny conditions.
In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the wider Rift Valley, thunderstorms and heavy rain showers are expected in several locations throughout the five-day period.
Additionally, Gikungu warned of strong winds that could affect different regions. These southerly to south-easterly winds are expected to blow at speeds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 meters per second).
Areas likely to experience these strong winds include the Coastal region (including Kenya’s maritime waters), the South-Eastern lowlands, as well as parts of North-Eastern and North-Western Kenya.
The Kenya Met Department continues to monitor the weather situation and urges all Kenyans to stay informed and take appropriate measures to stay safe and healthy during this cold season.
