Police Deny Claims of Arresting 122 Foreign Protesters in Recent Demonstrations
The National Police Service (NPS) has come forward to dismiss as fake a notice that has been circulating on social media, claiming that over 100 foreigners were arrested during recent anti-government protests.
On Monday, July 7, the police used their official X (formerly Twitter) platform to clear the air, stating that they had nothing to do with the widely shared statement.
The viral notice falsely claimed that a total of 122 foreign nationals had been arrested during the last two nationwide protests, suggesting a rising number of foreigners taking part in local demonstrations.
“This press statement circulating on social media, purporting to be issued by the Spokesperson of the National Police Service, is fake,” the police stated in a warning message attached to their official rebuttal.
Despite not being posted on the NPS’s official website or verified social media accounts, the fake document was designed to look very convincing.
It carried all the features of a typical NPS press release, including the official logo, font, format, and even what appeared to be the signature of NPS Spokesperson, Dr. Resila Atieno (although the document falsely named Muchiri Nyaga as the spokesperson).
The misleading notice claimed that the majority of the so-called arrested foreigners were Burundian nationals, allegedly totaling 26. It went on to list other nationalities, alleging that 19 South Sudanese, 18 Rwandans, 17 Somalis, 12 Congolese, 9 Nigerians, 7 Ugandans, 3 Yemenis, and 11 individuals labeled as stateless were also detained.
The police have strongly denied these allegations, emphasizing that the document is fabricated and does not reflect the reality on the ground. They urged members of the public to be cautious and only rely on verified official sources for credible updates.
This clarification comes at a time when the country is experiencing increased political unrest and public demonstrations, mostly driven by youth-led protests against government policies.
The police continue to monitor the situation while also battling a wave of misinformation spreading online.
