MP Linked to Former DP Gachagua Arrested During Saba Saba Protests
Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji has been arrested, the National Police Service (NPS) has officially confirmed.
In a statement released on Monday, July 7, during an update on the Saba Saba protests, the NPS confirmed Mukunji’s arrest but did not provide details on the exact location where he was being detained.
Mukunji, who is a known ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, is believed to have been arrested over allegations of inciting violence during the Saba Saba Day demonstrations.
One of Gachagua’s lawyers, Ndegwa Njiru, disclosed that the MP was apprehended at approximately 3 p.m. He was then booked at Kibii Police Station at 3:53 p.m. under Occurrence Book (OB) number 06/07/07/2025. Njiru further explained that Mukunji was later picked up by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), who were reportedly from Juja Police Station. This development was also confirmed by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Kibii.
“The OCS confirmed that Mukunji was only booked there temporarily for holding purposes,” Njiru stated.
Njiru expressed concern over the secrecy surrounding the MP’s whereabouts. He revealed that although Mukunji’s vehicle was left behind at Kibii Police Station, no official documentation was made regarding his transfer to another location. The lawyer described the process as highly irregular and lacking transparency.
Later in the evening, Njiru provided an additional update, revealing that the lawmaker was now reportedly in the custody of the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU).
According to Njiru, Mukunji is set to face terrorism-related charges, which are allegedly linked to his involvement in the recent protests.
“I have received information suggesting that police officers are planning to plant illegal items such as drugs and explosives in Mukunji’s car, which remains parked at Kibii Police Station,” Njiru warned.
He also noted that despite requesting an official inventory of the vehicle, the police officers refused to provide any documentation, further deepening the concerns about possible foul play.
Other political figures aligned with Gachagua, including Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina, have come out strongly to condemn the arrest and are calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Gitonga Mukunji.
Meanwhile, Rigathi Gachagua himself has not yet issued any public statement regarding the arrest of his political ally.
