Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome, through the National Police Service (NPS), has appealed to Kenyans to help identify criminal groups that hijacked the Saba Saba Day demonstrations and took advantage of the protests to loot and cause destruction.
According to the police, at least 11 people lost their lives during the chaotic protests. The demonstrations also left 52 police officers and 11 civilians nursing injuries.
In addition, 12 police vehicles were damaged, alongside three government vehicles and four private cars owned by civilians. Police further confirmed that 567 individuals were arrested in connection with the unrest.
Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, while addressing the media on Monday evening, said that although demonstrations across many parts of the country were conducted peacefully, some were disrupted by criminals who infiltrated the crowds with the intention of creating chaos.
Nyaga explained that these lawbreakers were behind a series of violent incidents, including looting and attacks on police officers. He stated that preliminary investigations had already uncovered evidence of fatalities, serious injuries, damage to vehicles, and widespread looting by groups believed to be organized gangs.
Among those arrested during the crackdown was Gitonga Mukunji, the Member of Parliament representing Manyatta Constituency. His arrest has drawn significant attention, but the police have maintained that all suspects will face the law.
“The National Police Service appreciates the majority of Kenyans who obeyed the law and chose to remain peaceful during the protests,” Nyaga said. “Unfortunately, some individuals deliberately engaged in criminal activities aimed at disrupting public order.”
He added, “We have arrested several suspects, among them Honourable Gitonga Mukunji, MP for Manyatta. The investigations are now underway to ensure that all those responsible for the violence and destruction are held accountable.”
Nyaga also took time to commend the conduct of police officers during the tense protests. He praised them for remaining calm and professional, even in situations where they were attacked or provoked by the unruly mobs.
To help fast-track investigations, the police have urged members of the public to report any information that may assist in tracking down the remaining suspects. Citizens are encouraged to visit the nearest police station or contact the NPS using toll-free numbers: 999, 911, or 112.
“We are asking any member of the public with information about individuals who participated in these acts of violence and criminality to step forward. Your cooperation can help us restore peace and ensure justice is served,” Nyaga concluded.
