Drama as Moi’s Grandson Breaks Down in Court After Sentencing

There was emotional drama at the Nakuru Law Courts on Wednesday, July 9, after Collins Kibet, the grandson of former President Daniel arap Moi, broke down in tears upon receiving a fresh jail sentence.

The court ordered him to serve an additional two weeks behind bars, just days after he had completed a two-day civil jail sentence.

As police officers led him out of the courtroom, Kibet emotionally cried out that life had been extremely difficult for him since the death of his father.

He claimed he had repeatedly asked for help but no one had responded to his pleas. In his distress, he said he had even reached out to President William Ruto for assistance, but his efforts had not borne any fruit.

“I am unwell. I’ve done my best. Since my father passed away, I have suffered so much. I have nowhere to live. I have asked for mercy, but there’s no compassion left in this world for orphans. I even pleaded with the president of this country to help me, but no one wants to help me,” he cried loudly, visibly overwhelmed by emotion.

His latest court appearance came just two days after he was sentenced to two days in civil jail for contempt of court. On Monday, July 7, Principal Magistrate Kipkirui Kibelion had ruled: “I commit him to a civil jail term for two days, and we shall return on Wednesday for further directions on the matter.”

Kibet had been arrested earlier on Thursday, July 3, and was held in remand throughout the weekend. The contempt of court charges stemmed from an ongoing child support case filed by his estranged wife, Gladys Jeruto Tagi.

Earlier in the year, the Nakuru court had ordered Kibet to ensure that his children were enrolled at Kabarak Schools and that he fully paid for their medical insurance coverage. However, he failed to meet these obligations, which triggered the most recent arrest.

This is not the first time he has been jailed in connection with this case. In September 2024, he was also arrested and sentenced to seven days in prison after failing to comply with court orders requiring him to pay child support.

Following his previous arrest, the same magistrate instructed his legal team to calculate all outstanding child support payments and share the breakdown with the defense lawyers within three days.

Before his most recent arrest, Kibet had reportedly been in hiding for seven months. Police finally apprehended him in Ong’ata Rongai after a prolonged manhunt.

The child support case dates back to 2021, when his estranged wife, Gladys Jeruto Tagi, first took him to court accusing him of neglecting their two children. At the time, Kibet told the court that he was broke and completely dependent on the generosity of well-wishers. He said he had no financial ability to take care of his children’s needs, including education and healthcare.

Despite his family’s powerful legacy and his connection to the late President Moi, Collins Kibet continues to face legal trouble and personal hardship, with the court demanding that he take responsibility for his children’s welfare.
