A large crowd caused heavy traffic and raised tension along the busy Jogoo Road in Nairobi on Wednesday, July 9, as they marched toward the city centre.
The group, believed to be made up of supporters of former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga, disrupted normal flow of traffic and drew the attention of both motorists and residents.
Reports indicate that the group had earlier gathered at the Makadara Law Courts, where a session related to Maina Njenga’s ongoing criminal case was scheduled. The court appearance drew a significant number of followers who later began marching from the court area.
They chanted “Ndovu, Ndovu” as they moved in large numbers, believed to be either accompanying or showing support for Njenga following the hearing.
Eyewitnesses say that after the court session, the crowd followed court vehicles that were reportedly transporting Njenga.
Police officers confirmed that the demonstrators remained peaceful throughout, and no acts of violence were reported. Despite this, anti-riot police from Manyanja Road were deployed as a precaution to maintain order and prevent any possible chaos.
The large crowd created unease among business owners along Jogoo Road, especially following the recent Saba Saba demonstrations, during which many traders suffered losses due to looting and destruction of property. Many shop owners expressed concern that a similar situation might occur again.
“Let’s remain alert. We cannot afford a repeat of what happened during the Saba Saba Day protests,” said Magunas Supermarket’s Jogoo Road branch supervisor, addressing security officers stationed in the area.
The movement of the crowd caused a major traffic snarl-up, as vehicles were unable to pass through the congested road. Motorists were urged to avoid Jogoo Road and use alternative routes to avoid the delays and confusion brought on by the march.
“A large crowd is currently marching down Jogoo Road and has reached the area near St. Stephen’s Church and Church Army. They seem to be heading towards City Stadium, singing and walking in a very organized way,” a concerned citizen reported online.
“They came from the Makadara Law Courts where Maina Njenga’s case was being heard. Both motorists and pedestrians are being advised to be extremely cautious in that area,” the social media user added.
Security has been heightened in the area, with officers keeping a close eye on the situation to prevent any incidents. The police continue to monitor the crowd’s movement to ensure safety and calm is maintained.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto has warned that anyone who engages in unlawful activities during protests will face strict action. He directed the police to remain firm and take appropriate steps against individuals who break the law during such gatherings.
