Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made it clear that he has no intention of holding any discussions with President William Ruto, despite growing pressure for a national dialogue from opposition leader Raila Odinga.
While speaking during a public engagement in the United States on Saturday, July 12, Gachagua firmly dismissed the possibility of any talks with President Ruto. He accused Ruto of being a habitual liar, even jokingly questioning whether “William Ruto” was the president’s real name.
“It’s not possible to hold dialogue with Ruto because he is a pathological liar,” Gachagua said. “In fact, there are serious doubts now whether his real name is even William Ruto. That’s how deep the dishonesty runs.”
He further insisted that if any such talks were to happen, he would not take part. “If there is any form of discussion with William Ruto, I won’t be available. And I also doubt that my sister Martha Karua would entertain such talks either,” Gachagua declared.
The former Deputy President’s remarks come days after Raila Odinga used the 35th anniversary of the historic Saba Saba protests, marked on Monday, July 7, to call for a national gathering.
Raila proposed the formation of a ‘national conclave’ aimed at addressing Kenya’s pressing economic, political, and social problems.
According to Raila, the issues that led to the original Saba Saba protests in the 1990s—such as economic injustice, government oppression, and widespread human rights violations—still persist today. He believes that the country needs a fresh direction through public participation, economic restructuring, and inclusive governance.
However, Gachagua dismissed Raila’s proposal, describing it as empty talk. He argued that Raila has no meaningful role to play in the country’s political future. In Gachagua’s view, Raila has repeatedly used the dialogue platform to gain personal advantage, especially after losing elections.
“That whole dialogue idea is being pushed by Raila. But Raila has become irrelevant in Kenya’s political space,” Gachagua said. “He always loses elections, then somehow sneaks his way into government. He wants power, but never wants to take any responsibility for the country’s problems.”
He added, “Now that the political environment has become tough, Raila is trying to step away and pretend he is not part of it. But if he really cared about Kenya and had the country’s best interests at heart, he would cut ties with Ruto altogether.
Instead, he’s still enjoying the benefits of being close to power, yet wants to act like he’s on the outside. That’s not being honest.”
Gachagua is currently on a two-month visit to the United States, where he is meeting Kenyans living abroad. His tour is widely seen as part of his early campaign efforts as he eyes a presidential run in the 2027 General Elections.
