Several Killed After Trailer Loses Control on Narok–Suswa Road
At least four people have lost their lives in a tragic road accident involving a trailer that lost control along the Suswa–Narok highway, near Nairekia Engare, just close to the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) crossing.
Among those who died in the accident were two boda boda riders, a pedestrian, and a passenger who was inside the ill-fated trailer.
According to early reports, the trailer suddenly veered off its lane and crashed into three other vehicles. The impact left behind massive destruction before the trailer finally came to a stop.
The Motorists Association of Kenya confirmed the fatal incident and issued a warning to all road users along the Narok–Mai Mahiu highway. In a message shared on social media, the association said, “Take care – Narok Mai Mahiu fatal road crash at Nairekia Engare near the SGR. Be alert.”
Police officers and emergency teams quickly responded to the scene to handle the situation and offer help. An investigation is now ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.
This deadly crash adds to the growing number of accidents reported along the Narok–Mai Mahiu road, which has been experiencing a spike in traffic and road tragedies in recent months.
Just a few weeks ago, on June 28, another fatal accident claimed the lives of two people, including a senior police officer, at the Maduro area on the same highway.
Witnesses at the time said the accident happened when a long-distance trailer lost control and smashed into two private cars—a Toyota Prado TX and a Toyota G-Touring. According to the witnesses, the trailer’s brakes may have failed, which led to the deadly crash.
The victims who survived were rushed to nearby hospitals by good Samaritans and first responders, including members of Sikika Road Safety, an organization that works to improve road safety and was among the first to raise the alarm about the crash.
One of the vehicles involved in the crash was a Toyota Prado driven by Chief Inspector George Rotich Kipchumba, a respected officer based at the Narok Traffic Base.
In yet another accident on Sunday, a major pile-up between Kinungi and Flyover caused heavy traffic congestion, almost bringing the busy highway to a complete stop for several hours.
That incident created a massive traffic snarl-up, leaving many motorists stranded for most of the evening. Poor weather conditions made things worse, as thick fog and mist reduced visibility across much of the area. The ongoing cold weather in the region has continued to affect driving conditions, making roads more dangerous.
With such tragic events becoming more frequent, road safety advocates and authorities are calling for more caution, better vehicle maintenance, and responsible driving to help reduce the number of accidents along this high-risk route.
