Protests in Limuru as Residents Accuse Assistant Chief of Killing Man Over Alleged Theft
Tensions ran high in Karanji area, Limuru, after angry residents held protests accusing an Assistant Chief of killing a man suspected of stealing maize. The demonstrations caused disruptions to normal business in the area, as the community demanded justice and swift action against the chief.
Carrying placards and tree branches, the enraged residents marched through the streets, eventually heading to the chief’s home. They called for his immediate arrest, accusing him of taking the law into his own hands instead of following proper legal procedures.
According to several reports, the deceased man was allegedly caught stealing maize from the Assistant Chief’s farm. However, instead of being apprehended and handed over to the police, he was reportedly assaulted and killed on the spot.
The incident has sparked outrage among locals who are questioning why someone suspected of stealing was killed instead of being taken through the justice system. “If a poor person steals even a small item, police are quick to arrest them.
But now, this Assistant Chief has taken someone’s life and is still walking free. The only thing that has moved fast is taking the body to the mortuary,” one resident complained during the protest.
The man’s lifeless body was discovered by his wife, who was left devastated after finding him dead in the farm. “I was in shock when I saw his body lying there,” she said. “What did he do that was so serious to deserve death? We have lived together for years and this is the first time he has ever been accused of theft,” she added with tears.
Local authorities, led by the area Deputy Commissioner, confirmed the incident and assured residents that investigations are underway. The Deputy Commissioner stated that immediate action had been taken against the Assistant Chief, including his suspension from duty.
“The first thing I did upon receiving the report was to direct him not to report to work and to lock up his office,” the Deputy Commissioner stated. “He will not be allowed to carry out any official duties until investigations are fully completed.”
The victim’s body has since been transferred to the Tigoni mortuary where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
This disturbing case comes at a time when Kenyan security officers are under increased scrutiny over the use of excessive force against citizens, both in public and in custody.
A recent case that stirred national concern involved Julie Njoki, who died after allegedly being beaten while in police custody. Her tragic death has only added to the public’s growing unease about the rising cases of police brutality and abuse of power in the country.
Many Kenyans are now calling for accountability, not just in the Karanji case, but in all incidents where authorities are believed to have used unjustifiable violence against civilians.
