Suspect in KNH Ward Murder Had Remained at Hospital for Months After Official Discharge

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has shared new information regarding a shocking murder that occurred within its facility, shedding light on the background of the man suspected to have committed the crime.

In a detailed statement released on Friday, July 18, KNH revealed that the suspect, who is now in custody, had previously been a long-term patient at the hospital. Even though he had been officially discharged, he continued to stay at the facility for several months.

According to hospital records, the man was first admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) back in November 2022. After receiving treatment, he was transferred to a general ward.

However, due to being homeless and having no known family or confirmed identity, the hospital had no place to release him to after his treatment ended.

KNH made several efforts to trace his identity. These included running his fingerprints through official databases and even appealing to the public for help via the hospital’s social media platforms. Eventually, in June 2024, the hospital managed to find a home where he could stay, and he was discharged to that facility.

Unfortunately, he became ill again in December 2024 and was readmitted to KNH. By January 2025, he was well enough to be discharged once more. However, the home that had taken him in previously refused to receive him back, though the reason for this refusal remains unclear.

This left the hospital with no option but to keep him while searching for another place that could accommodate him.

Their search was interrupted when the suspect was linked to the murder of 40-year-old Gilbert Kinyua, who was killed in February 2025.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) identified the man as a person of interest in the case and instructed the hospital to continue holding him as investigations were still ongoing.

While still staying at KNH, another disturbing incident occurred — the murder of Edward Maingi Ndegwa, a male patient admitted to Ward 7B on July 11, 2025. The same suspect was again at the center of this case.

KNH clarified in its statement that the hospital had no intention of keeping the suspect indefinitely. “He had already been discharged. But due to the absence of alternatives and instructions from investigative authorities, we had no choice but to let him remain at the facility,” KNH explained.

The suspect was finally arrested on the evening of Thursday, July 17, by detectives from the DCI. He was named the prime suspect in the brutal killing of Ndegwa.

Initial findings show that on the day of the murder, a nurse checked on the victim at around 11:30 a.m. and took his blood pressure. Later, at around 12:30 p.m., a relative visited and confirmed he was stable before leaving the hospital an hour later, at 1:30 p.m.

However, not long after — at around 2:00 p.m. — a hospital cleaner noticed blood coming from the patient’s neck. The alarm was raised immediately, and detectives were called to the scene.

During their investigation, they followed blood-stained slipper prints leading from the victim’s bed to a nearby toilet and then to a side room within the ward. That room was occupied by the suspect.

Inside, detectives recovered critical evidence — a pair of blue slippers, a blood-soaked bedsheet, and a knife that had been wrapped inside gloves.

The hospital and authorities are now piecing together how such a violent crime could occur inside one of Kenya’s top medical institutions, as the investigation continues to uncover more details.
