Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has confirmed that the long-awaited construction of the Narok International Airport is now officially underway. This major infrastructure project comes three months after President William Ruto launched it, signaling a new era of growth for the county and the country.
In an update shared on Monday, July 21, Senator Ledama announced that the main contractors, including engineers and technicians, have arrived at the construction site and begun essential groundwork.
These early activities include mobilizing heavy equipment for runway tarmacking, setting up electricity supply infrastructure, and building a secure perimeter fence.
According to the project’s lead contractor, the construction is expected to be completed within the next year.
Senator Ledama assured residents that he will make frequent visits to the site to monitor progress and ensure that the airport is built according to plan and without delays.
“Construction of the Narok International Airport has officially begun today,” said Senator Olekina. “I will personally oversee the process to make sure the job is done right.
We also express our gratitude to the president for fulfilling his promise and to the various ministries working together to support this major initiative.”
He also called upon the Narok County government to finalize the tendering process for the airport’s terminal buildings so that the construction of these vital structures can proceed without interruption.
Senator Ledama emphasized the airport’s importance in driving local and national economic development. He pointed out that once operational, the airport will provide job opportunities, uplift surrounding communities, and enhance the country’s tourism potential.
“This project is a game-changer. It will bring employment, spark development, and shift focus from politics to progress,” the senator said. “By next year, we expect to see direct international flights arriving from Europe, bringing thousands of tourists to this region.”
President Ruto, while visiting Narok on May 6, had previously highlighted that the airport project was initiated in response to demands from local residents.
They emphasized that building an international airport would significantly boost the county’s tourism sector, which is their primary economic driver.
The president stressed that the airport will improve access to the Maasai Mara National Reserve—one of the most famous and visited safari destinations in the world.
To fund the construction, both the national and county governments have committed to contributing Ksh700 million each, demonstrating a strong partnership between the two levels of government.
“When I came here for the economic forum, the people of Narok told me they needed an airport to support their tourism industry,” President Ruto said.
“Visitors from Kenya and across the globe should be able to land directly here, which will not only improve travel convenience but also increase the revenue generated from Maasai Mara for the benefit of the people of Narok County.”
The Narok International Airport is now seen as a beacon of hope for the region’s development, promising better infrastructure, increased tourism, and more economic opportunities for the local population.
