Kalonzo Musyoka Rejects Pressure to Join Ruto’s Government
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has firmly rejected mounting calls for him to align with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government. Despite months of pressure from Ruto allies urging him to cross over to the ruling side, Kalonzo has made it clear that he will remain in the opposition.
In a strong and passionate statement released on Saturday, July 19, Kalonzo emphasized his loyalty to the opposition and his role in holding the government accountable.
He criticized the Ruto-led administration for failing to fulfill promises made to Kenyans and vowed to continue defending the rights of citizens and promoting peace.
“I will never associate myself with this rogue and lawless regime,” Kalonzo declared. “I have no intention of entering into any dialogue with a government that is responsible for the bloodshed of our children.
Let there be no confusion about this: the Ruto dictatorship thrives on fear, chaos, and threats. That is how they operate. But we will not stay quiet, and we refuse to be silenced. The spirit of resistance is still alive and burning,” he added.
Kalonzo’s remarks came in response to ongoing appeals from Kenya Kwanza leaders, including Cabinet Secretary for Labour, Alfred Mutua, who had previously encouraged him to leave the opposition.
Speaking on June 17, Mutua said Kalonzo should stop following the opposition’s divisive and disrespectful tactics, which he claimed were driven by Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“Even if Kalonzo is a peaceful man and fears Gachagua, he should step up and correct him when he’s wrong,” Mutua said. “The same kind of disrespect Gachagua is showing now is what he used to argue that we didn’t have the numbers to win.”
Earlier, on June 9, during an event in Kitui, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula also addressed Kalonzo, urging him to make his own political choices instead of allowing others to decide for him.
“To my brother Kalonzo, never let others choose your friends or enemies for you. You are your own man. Your allies may not be someone else’s allies, and the same goes for your enemies,” Wetang’ula advised.
Kalonzo Condemns Boniface Mwangi’s Arrest
In the same breath, Kalonzo also spoke out strongly against the arrest of well-known human rights activist Boniface Mwangi. He expressed outrage over the incident and assured the public that the opposition’s legal team is working on Mwangi’s release.
“I condemn in the strongest terms the arrest of Boniface Mwangi, who has always been a brave and fearless defender of justice and truth. I have instructed our legal experts to do everything they can to ensure he is released as quickly as possible,” Kalonzo said.
Mwangi was arrested on the morning of Saturday, July 19, at his residence in the Lukenya area, located in Mavoko Sub-County, Machakos County.
According to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Sunday, July 20, Mwangi is accused of being involved in facilitating terrorist activities related to the mass protests that occurred on June 25, 2025.
“Boniface Mwangi was arrested on July 19, 2025, at his home in Lukenya, Machakos County, by our officers. He is being investigated for allegedly helping to organize terrorist-related actions during the nationwide protests held on June 25,” the DCI statement read.
Kalonzo’s strong defense of Mwangi and refusal to join the government come at a time of heightened political tension and public frustration, especially among young people and civil society groups.
His words signal a continued commitment to opposition politics and the fight for accountability, even as some of his peers consider joining the government.
