Chaos broke out in Nairobi’s Mukuru kwa Reuben area after a group of armed goons violently raided a local business, leaving at least 10 people injured and making away with goods valued at over Ksh4.8 million. Police have since launched an investigation into the Sunday morning attack, which has left more than 46 employees jobless and desperate.
According to eyewitnesses, the thugs struck at around 8:00 am, barely three hours after the business had opened its doors. The attackers hurled stones and forcefully gained entry before ransacking the premises and looting electronics and other valuable items. Anyone who tried to resist was beaten and injured during the incident.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, July 23, some of the affected workers shared their pain and frustration after returning to the site, only to find the business completely shut down. The owner informed them that she had no means to reopen the business due to the massive losses incurred.
“We came to work as usual at 5am, hoping for a normal day. But around 8am, out of nowhere, a gang showed up and started throwing stones. They raided the entire business, stealing everything,” one of the distraught employees recalled.
The workers, who now face a financial crisis, said the job was their only source of income. Since the attack, most of them have been unable to afford basic needs like food.
Another worker added, “We called the police. They arrived, but shockingly, they just stood there and watched as everything was taken. They didn’t help at all. We’re now stuck, broke, and our families are suffering.”
The business owner, overwhelmed by the losses, blamed the attack on the worsening insecurity in the area. She expressed heartbreak and fear, stating that her life is now in danger and she doesn’t know how to start over.
“I have nothing left. The thugs took everything while the police watched and did nothing. I’m broken, and I fear for my life. I’m appealing to the government—there’s no security here in Mukuru kwa Ruben,” she said tearfully.
Following the attack, tension has gripped the area, with locals demanding changes at the local police post. Residents say they feel completely unprotected and are urging the government to step in and restore order.
The Mukuru incident is just one of many across Kenya in recent weeks, as cases of goons attacking businesses have spiked, particularly during and after anti-government protests. Many Kenyans now fear that without stronger security measures, more livelihoods could be destroyed in similar fashion.
