Government Introduces Tough Rules for CHAN 2025 Fans in Kenya

With the highly anticipated African Nations Championship (CHAN) just around the corner — set to kick off on August 2 — the Kenyan government has rolled out a new set of strict guidelines for fans who plan to attend the matches.

These protocols are aimed at improving safety, streamlining entry, and ensuring an organized tournament experience for everyone involved.

Speaking on Wednesday, July 23, Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Salim Mvurya emphasized that the new measures are not just precautionary but necessary to maintain order and security throughout the event.

“These protocols are about creating a secure and smooth experience for everyone attending CHAN 2025,” Mvurya stated.

Digital Tickets Only – No Paper Allowed

One of the major changes fans must prepare for is the transition to fully digital ticketing. According to the CS, all entry passes will be sold exclusively online, and no paper tickets will be accepted at any stadium gate — a move meant to eliminate fraud and ease crowd control.

“All tickets will be sold exclusively online,” he stressed. “If you don’t have a valid digital ticket, you won’t be allowed into the stadium.”

Fans are therefore urged to purchase their tickets in advance from the official digital platforms to avoid last-minute disappointments.

Security Tightened – Four Layers of Screening

To boost security, the Ministry of Sports has introduced a four-tier screening process at all stadiums hosting the matches. These security checkpoints will perform multiple tasks: verifying digital ticket authenticity, scanning for prohibited items, and managing crowd movement to avoid stampedes and illegal entry.

“We’re putting these screening layers in place to ensure fans can enter and move around the stadiums safely and efficiently,” CS Mvurya explained.

The screening process will make it extremely difficult for anyone to gain access without a proper ticket, discouraging habitual gate crashers and ensuring orderly conduct throughout the games.

Hotlines for Safety Concerns

To further strengthen security, the Ministry has launched a dedicated CHAN Security Hotline. This hotline will allow members of the public to report any suspicious activity, threats, or potential safety risks in real time — making fan safety a shared responsibility between the government and the public.

Nairobi to Host Key Matches

CHAN 2025 will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, with Nairobi set to host all of Kenya’s Group A matches as well as the grand final on August 30. The Moi International Sports Centre (Kasarani) and Nyayo National Stadium have been selected as the main venues for these games.

The government’s new measures also align with CAF’s strict safety and crowd control regulations, which require all host nations to implement robust protocols to protect fans, players, and officials.

With these enhanced procedures in place, the government hopes to deliver a safe, seamless, and memorable CHAN 2025 experience — a tournament expected to draw thousands of fans from across Africa and beyond.
