The family of missing Kenyan human rights activist Mwabili Mwagodi is calling on both the Kenyan and Tanzanian governments to urgently investigate his mysterious disappearance while in Tanzania.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mwabili’s sister Isabella Kituri expressed deep concern, revealing that the family was informed that Mwabili had suddenly gone missing without a trace, and all efforts to locate him had so far failed.
Kituri suspects that Mwabili’s outspoken activism may be linked to his disappearance.
“My brother was simply fulfilling his civic responsibility as a concerned Kenyan,” said an emotional Kituri. “He had boldly challenged President William Ruto’s church fundraising campaigns and supported Gen Z movements on social media. If he did anything wrong, he should be brought before a court, not abducted.”
The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, July 23, while Mwabili was on his way to Dar es Salaam. His wife shared that he had left his vehicle behind and opted to take public transport to the city, where he works for a hospitality company.
However, around 10 p.m., his phone went off, and multiple calls to reach him went unanswered—raising fears of a potential abduction.
Hussein Khalid, CEO of rights group Vocal Africa, confirmed the activist’s disappearance, saying he was informed by one of Mwabili’s relatives. Khalid condemned what he called a pattern of targeted abductions of Kenyan activists in Tanzania.
“Another Kenyan activist has vanished in Tanzania. Mwabili Mwagodi was known for his stance against church donations and was abducted—again, without reason,” he remarked.
Mwabili’s case comes just weeks after prominent Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and others were detained in Tanzania, further fueling concerns about the safety of Kenyan activists working or traveling in the region.
A photo shared from past demonstrations shows Mwabili actively participating in anti-government protests, underlining his dedication to civil rights and public accountability.
The family now wants clear answers and swift action from both governments to ensure Mwabili’s safe return.
