Kenya is preparing for a major milestone in its football history as it gets ready to make its first-ever appearance in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
This tournament, held every two years, will feature 19 teams and is exclusively for players who play in their country’s domestic leagues—making it a true test of local talent across the continent.
Under the leadership of head coach Benni McCarthy, the Harambee Stars are determined to shine and leave a strong impression. CHAN 2024 is jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
The tournament officially kicks off on Saturday, August 2, at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and will wrap up on Saturday, August 30, at the Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.
Kenya finds itself in a tough situation right from the start. The Harambee Stars were drawn into Group A alongside some of the continent’s strongest CHAN teams—Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Angola, Morocco, and Zambia. It’s a group filled with seasoned opponents, setting the stage for a highly competitive journey.
Coach Benni McCarthy, though aware of the difficult draw, has taken it in stride with a touch of humor and a lot of optimism. He playfully pointed fingers at former Kenyan international Macdonald Mariga—who took part in the draw—for placing Kenya in such a tough group.
However, behind the jokes, McCarthy emphasized a message of resilience and readiness. He views the group as a golden opportunity for Kenya to test itself against the best and grow in stature.
Team captain Aboud Omar echoed this sentiment, expressing belief that facing top-tier teams early is a blessing in disguise. For them, it’s not just about surviving the group, but rising to the occasion and proving that Kenya belongs on the big stage.
What makes Group A particularly daunting is that Kenya will have to battle two CHAN giants—Morocco and DR Congo—both former tournament champions. These teams not only bring experience but also an established football culture built on strong local leagues and consistent international performances.
DR Congo – The Formidable Opponent
Kenya’s first CHAN match will be against DR Congo on Sunday, August 3, at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani. DR Congo, known as the Leopards, are CHAN veterans and two-time champions.
They won the tournament in 2009 and again in 2016, making them one of the most successful teams in CHAN history. They also hold the record for the highest number of CHAN appearances—seven in total.
Their dominance is rooted in their vibrant local league, Linafoot, which has become a breeding ground for technically skilled and physically strong players. Many of their stars regularly play in continental competitions like the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. This level of experience gives DR Congo a massive edge in CHAN tournaments.
Angola – The Silent Threat
After DR Congo, Kenya will face Angola—another tricky opponent. Known as the Palancas Negras, Angola brings a unique blend of solid defending and fast-paced attacking play. They’ve been part of CHAN history since the early days and even reached the final in 2011, finishing second after Tunisia.
This will be Angola’s fifth CHAN appearance, and they are seen as a potential dark horse in the group. Their disciplined style, combined with physical endurance and tactical patience, means they can frustrate even the strongest teams.
In a group where every goal and point could make a huge difference, Angola is a team that cannot be underestimated.
Morocco and Zambia – Yet to Come
Kenya will also face Morocco—another CHAN champion—and Zambia, both of whom bring high energy, experience, and deep talent pools. These teams are known for producing quality football and are serious contenders for the title.
For Kenya, Group A is not just a group of death; it’s a battlefield of opportunity. The team must remain focused, united, and fearless. If the Harambee Stars can hold their own and perhaps pull off a surprise or two, CHAN 2024 could be the start of something historic for Kenyan football.
Coach McCarthy’s leadership, the home support, and the passion of the players could turn the odds in Kenya’s favor. But one thing is clear: CHAN 2024’s Group A will be the ultimate test—and Kenya is ready to face it head-on.
